I need a second monitor.  My primary is a 43" UHD tv, which is working great.  I own a 1080p monitor but it's on indefinite loan to a friend so she can work from home without using the laptop screen, which I wouldn't wish on anyone.  I could get a second 43" monitor, but I figured I'd ask for recommendations.

I've got a mish-mash of displays - but mostly Samsung for my PCs.

Sweet. I'm very pleased wishing myself for getting my gaming laptop back up and running. It was having power problems and I kept buying cheap power cables and batteries. So I threw a Benjamin at it this time and I guess that was most of the problem. But then I also messed with the power settings and THEN I REALIZED MY SSD WAS PARTITIONED AND I HAD BEEN RUNNING ALL MY PROGRAMS ON AN HDD UNNECESSARILY FOR FIVE YEARS. So I reinstalled all my programs, removing them from the hard drive and placing them on the solid drive. And now Starcraft II is insanely fast to load. A second or two instead of 30-75 seconds. It's glorious. I can't wait to see the difference it makes for Deus Ex, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

LOL. I hate it when I have expensive components that would benefit my life and I discover I've been under or non-utilizing them. Sometimes it is as simple as spending a few minutes reading the features list and then the manual, instead of just jumping right in and trying to figure out what it can do - but I do hate to RTFM.

Got paid today, made the required payments, have 39 bucks left over.  Looks like I'm not upgrading anything this week.  Doesn't look good for next week either lol

Nothing much, just my life.  Buying a toy like a MiSTer would be nice, or more RAM, or another monitor.  Or chinese food lol

Not yet.  Want one.  I would absolutely love to play Dr Mario and original nes Legend of Zelda.  Getting a controller much like the NES Advantage would be completely sick and awesome, thought I do have a couple of USB controllers already that are decent.

I can fix this for you. We just have to arrange a time for you to come by. I've got two RetroPis, and I never use either of them, and never need both of them.

You can borrow one indefinitely.  Because Wall Of Hate is full of more love than Oprah! It is even in a 3D printed Amiga 500 mini style case and has a momentary off button wired to it so you can power it down safely.

That has been the problem. Probably a Saturday - but I have to check with my wife. Everything has been booked so constantly lately. Let me find out and get back to you.

If you have issues finding replacements I have a metric buttload of it. I have a stack taller than either of my children of  DVD media. I still use it occasionally, but that is getting less and less often.

The only reason I noticed is because I had to burn recover media for that laptop.

Windows Home Server was AWESOME at its peak for backing up and restoring systems. Nothing since has been as bulletproof or made backup/restore so easy.

I feel like WinXP was the peak of windows being good at networking for the home user.  Now I can't even get my two computers to see each other on the same fucking network.

Some of that is because at the end of WinXP is when wireless started to take off. Wireless routers all have very different setups to allow LAN-like interactions. Some are REALLY hard to enable depending on the manufacturer.

However, if you really are on a LAN you need to make sure of a couple of things:

The PCs are in Workgroups named exactly the same thing.

Make sure network discovery is turned ON

Create a local account on each PC with matching name and password. login to them with %pcname%\%username%

Make an shortcut icon with shortcut using PC name and put it on the desktop of each PC. Desktop shortcuts resolve at login and tend to make things like this work more consitently.

Here is a pretty good article that goes over some of the other hidden pitfalls http://woshub.com/network-computers-not-showing-windows-10/

But yeah, it used to be easy and now it is a nightmare.

Weirdly enough - it was because of Linux and "security" that Microsoft adopted a MOST restrictive instead of a LEAST restrictive model for home networking... even though for most home scenarios, LEAST restrictive is perfectly appropriate.

They also started differentiating between what XP "Home" offered for networking and what XP Professional offered - causing further issues for home users. They introduced "Simple Networking," which really wasn't.

These are the problems Jerry Moore is experiencing with getting his Dell to talk to his Surface - I'm perfectly aware of what the issues are...

You can also just use a local account on the target machine instead of having the same account/pw on both machines, and send credentials when accessing the remote machine - but Thanny didn't tell you that because it starts to get confusing if you don't do this shit to put food on your table.

But yeah, it used to be easy and now it is a nightmare. Linux did that. I always thought that the Linux influence on Windows was a lot like the Liberal influence on America - they *improve* things for everyone to keep us all safe - by making things WORSE for everyone. :)

Screw those guys. I would LOVE to be able to have native network governance software on my computer where I can see all the devices on my computer and what they're doing. Did my kid fire up the tablet at 10:30pm? Tablet gulag. Is my kid diligently studying geology? Brownie points. I used to have two WiFi routers right next to each other until the lady at Radio Shack--I'm so blessed to have two within a short drive!--told me they interfere with each other. Some networking software on my computer should have given me a tip about that five years ago.

The freaking state of things. Barf.
