Subject: Amiga 1200 Recapping - Old capacitors still check OK!

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi am in the process of recapping a A1200 - but the catch is that all the capacitors I have removed have tested OK on a capacitor analyser. I have changed about 70% of them already.

I am now looking at the 'difficult' ones close to plastic pieces or such - Is it worth the risk ?

Subject: SCSI2SD with A2091 in an Amiga2000 How to (Hardware side)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hey Amigafolks... I've been battling with this for a while, and while I'm sure someone else has already sorted this out, I'm posting this as a reference, as well as a note to my future self so I don't need to this all over again! Feel free to give me some feedback on this how to!

First:

A2091, 7.0 ROMS, 2MB ram onboard

WD33C93-08 Chip installed

I did have to repair a memory socket initially, and it took me some time to redo the two "hardwired" jumpers to a clean state. I mounted all the "new" chips as well. The ram needs to be set at JP1. It goes in banks of 4 chips (256K, 512K, 1M, 2M). The onboard RAM improves file transfer speeds/etc. If running stock 68K remember 8MB ram ceiling between all devices. I ran into that one too!

The updated WD339C chip cleans up some errors, ROM 7.0 makes larger drives possible, together with a third mod: A Jumper installed at JP201 for Later SCSI speed bump.

(Defaults to pins 2 and 3 on board, 1 and 3 with a jumper wire enables 14mhz SCSI with GuruROM or software patch) I plan to explore this later, apparently this is possible with 7.0ROMS?

Jumper installed for JP3: INT6/INT2 to Select interface on Zorro Bus

(default trace cut, INT2 is default) I get the impression the default is preferred, though having INT6 may help if you have a full Zorro Bus (at a small? performance hit?)

Second:

SCSI2SD v5.1

FAT32 formatted SD card, one partition only prior to putting into SCSI2SD card slot.

In SCSI2SD utility, after plugging in USB micro on the board to PC/MAC/etc

Termination ENABLED

scsi Speed NORMAL

SCSI Selection Delay AUTO

(ignore the rest)

For virtual drive configurations:

I have found that starting virtual drives in SCSI2SD utility at SCSI ID 1 (2, 3, 4 for the other three if wanted) works - as the A2091 seems to want ID 0, and not setting unique ID strings and what not everywhere causes issues and lockups.

In my case I set up a 4GB card with 4 900MB partitions. I used the internal Vendor/Product ID/Revision/Serial spaces in SCSI2SD Util to give them all fully unique ID strings. This works well for HDtools to format them as "unique" drives - I got hung up on that before, even though they all format identically otherwise.

512 for sector size on each drive in SCSI2SD Util. Use the Auto option. I saw some advice to format the SCSI2SD drive that is boot to start on sector 2 - This worked better for me set at zero in an actual machine application.

SAVE to board, verify the flash is fully done via prompt, disconnect cable. DO NOT POWER SCSI2SD from both USB and it's host power source at the same time. Bad Juju!

Plug in one of the 5V (floppy) power supplies to the SCSI2SD, I find it works more reliably in my experience. I've gotten a few power cord extensions/duplicators as I have several devices in or planned, like a FlashFloppy.

There's also a 3D printed mount board for the A2091 to take the SCSI2SD board where the original drive would have been. Very handy!

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I'm finally starting to "format" the drives after I actually finally saw them ID in HDTools.

Now on to figuring out the installing of WB3.1!

Subject: Best Place for posting unreleased games?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello all,

Hope this is the right place to post. I used to write a lot Amiga software and came across some old games I wrote and would love to share them with the community.

Where would you all suggest the best place to do this is? Aminet still?

Thanks,

C

Noticed that engine light started blinking continually on lap 185. Decreased usage of boost and got temps to green but light kept blinking. Is there "health bar" for engine and when it reaches certain point it starts to do that ? I know the engine blows when it´s too hot but this was different...

Subject: A2286 jumpers on main (not sandwich board)?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I was looking at the manual and I saw several jumpers, and have set them properly! the board boots in my A2000.

I was curious, does anyone know what J2 (2 pin), J4 (3 pins) and J7 (8 pin lead, #3 missing) are? I didn't see them described in the manual.
PC speaker i'd imagine is on there someplace. Reset switch? DB9 maybe? I do see an option for a serial port function in one of the config programs.
