Subject: Gotek as DF0 - What if I don't want to boot from the Gotek?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

In deciding whether to replace my defective internal floppy drive on my Amiga 1200, I have watched tons of videos and read an untold number of installation guides for a Gotek. I fully understand the usefulness of the Gotek for .adf files, games, whatever. What I cannot find an answer to is what if, during my normal course of using my 1200, I just want it to boot into Amiga/OS on my IDE CF card?

If I have to go through any kind of selection screen, be it through the dual mouse button hold down during boot or some choice in the Gotek flash software, it's pretty much a no go and I will just replace the current floppy with another one. I just want to turn it on and have it boot to the CF, no choices to make, no extended wait time. If I have a need to boot from DF0, I am ok to have to select something. For example, what happens if there is no flash drive in the goats when I boot?

Any insights here would be appreciated!

Thanks

Subject: Linux look and feel of AmigaOS

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello there,

I am sure you all have seen posts like this before and if that's the case my apologies. I am an old time Amiga User and would love to have a Linux-based AmigaOS Lookalike. I already checked out MorphOS not for me since I don't have the hardware for it same goes for AmigaOS 3.x or 4.x. I also looked at Aros not really a thing any longer I believe....AmiWM is like dead in the water. Does any of you perhaps know a project that tries to accomplish something like what I am looking for?

Don't hate me for it...I simply would love to use something that reminds me on AmigaOS and operates similar....something usable.....

Fixed-wings not your bag? Got to have a wokka in your choppa?

Well look no further. I have compiled the cream (and horrible sour milk) of the Amiga helicopter game crop - a comprehensive (yes, I didn't include the original Gunship) A to Z list (or Super Huey) featuring all games where rotors are the main draw.

Hover! across 3D landscapes.

Pop-up! to blast enemies.

Auto-rotate! when you switch the power off.

Subject: A1200 Gotek and mouse questions

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello, I'm looking to set up my A1200 and during the initial dust off I realised that I don't have a mouse. I blindly ordered a serial mouse, thinking it would just work, but it doesn't, so I wanted to check if there is anything I can do to get it to work, or if I should just order a USB adapter that I've seen a few places mention, or ideally, if there is somewhere recommended to get replacement mice from (I am based in Australia, so realise options might be limited).

Secondly, I was looking to replace the internal drive with a Gotek. I was able to load up Body Blows and that had a few issues, not sure if it was the disk, the drive, or the Amiga itself, but regardless, having the disks as images on a USB drive sounds very handy. The recommendation seems to be to get one with a rotary dial, but I'm guessing these won't fit into the internal drive space as-is, so would it need to be connected as an external drive, or are there solutions to move the dial to somewhere else? If it does need to be an external drive, what kind of cabling would be needed to get it to work?

Thanks for any advice

Subject: Reviving my old A1200

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've just dug my two old A1200's from out of my Mum's basement after 16 years in storage, and much to my amazement they both (mostly) work! I was thinking to combine the best bits from both into one fully working machine and sell the rest.

I'm looking for advice on a) what obvious hardware issues or preventative maintenance I need to be looking at, and b) what mods I should make to be usable while keeping as close to original as possible. Happy for those to be links out to good advice sites.

  1. A1200HD/40 rev 1D, ROM 3.1, Blizzard 1260, 3.5" HDD crammed in, discoloured case with holes hacked in for external CD drive cable etc. My original machine with much sentimental value!
  2. A1200HD/40 rev 1D, ROM 3.0, original 40MB Seagate HDD, GVP A1230 with 4MB RAM and SCSI expansion, case in very good condition. One I picked up cheap as a spare when no-one wanted them.

I also have an external floppy drive,1084S monitor, RGB to VGA adapter, various mice and joysticks, and an awful lot of old magazine cover floppies. The power brick is an A500. I even have an original box.

Both boot without the accelerator cards, but the Blizzard only boots in 2), and the GVP doesn't boot in either. Also 1) booting without a card takes about 5-10 seconds to get to the kickstart screen. The GVP appears clean with no leaks and intact battery. Any suggestions on what to look at on the GVP and on 1)?

I plan to disassemble and clean the mobo's and check the caps once I have a plan in place. I may get them recapped depending on how they look.

For upgrades, I was thinking of a SATA SSD with IDE adapter (as they are more reliable and I have spares), an internal scandoubler with HDMI out (I no longer have VGA capable monitors), and max out the Blizzard memory. I'd then like an SD card for removable storage, and perhaps network. I could do either with PCMCIA, but not both? Is there an IDE to SD Card option that fits in the expansion port hole? Or will the scandoubler fill that? SD Card is more useful than network for me. Removing the floppy is not an option as I want to keep that. Open to suggestions.

I've been working for about 4 years on a Python clone of the Amiga version of Deluxe Paint, and it's ready to be released. I believe it at least has feature parity with Deluxe Paint II but also has a lot of modern enhancements. Take a look if you're into that type of thing. https://github.com/mriale/PyDPainter

Amiga is, without a doubt, the most innovative computer in the 80s. What could Commodore do differently so that the Amiga line can continue to this day? I list out a few possibilities. But please leave your opinion in the comment section if the choice is not there
