Subject: Broken IDE connector (Amiga 1200)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Broken IDE connector (Amiga 1200)

Hi everybody!

I bought an Amiga 1200 off ebay, and bought separately a CF card to IDE adapter.
When I opened the computer to mount the adapter I saw a lot of missing pins on the IDE connector on the motherboard.

I would like to have it repaired in some local shop where they do electronic repairs, but I need something to replace the connector.
I didn't have any luck to find an original piece on the web, the only thing I found is this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/154564508535
But I am unsure if it fits, the space it's tight there and the header is right next to some electrical component, as you can see on the picture.

I thought I could use something like this: https://www.amazon.it/CDL-Micro-Pollici-convertitore-Adattatore/dp/B003534VDQ/ref=sr_1_3?__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91
Would it suffice?

Any advice?

Thanks!

Subject: Any ideas fixing Amiga with a turbocard not starting up?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello. I have an old A500 (EU PAL) that's been on the attic for like 25 years now. Recently I thought about getting it up and running again so I wondered if it still works. Got a scart cable for it but it did only show a white screen through scart->HDMI adapter. I read online that some of these after-market cables were bad and needed resistors so I opened the plug but there are all needed resistors on it.

I also have an A600 and it does the same with the cable so I guess I have to check the cable more intensely. However A600 has a color composite output so I bought composite->scart and plugged it into the HDMI adapter and this worked. Picture is blurry but that's how I remember composite.

Anyhow A500 has that black and white composite so I tried this but there I still only get a, this time grey screen.

Now the thing: The A500 has a 8MB 520-33-CD card in it and a MiniMegi Chip Agnus replacement (2MB). The 520-33-CD card has its own ROM and contains a 68k20 processor at 33 MHz. My original 68k I found but it has completely messed up pins. Could try soldering wires at the broken pins and bend these that still intact in place and try running it with that, but before doing all this and since I'd like to use the card, I want to find out what's wrong with it.

Oh, and the disk drive also doesn't do the clicky sound. Tried that same drive in the bare A600 and there it works even could read some of my old disks. So I guess there's something wrong with the A500 itself. The LEDs on the A500 seem to be ok tho, not blinking or anything.

How would you start finding the issue? I examined the board and there are no obvious broken caps or leaked stuff. Also it had no expansion board with the clock battery inside, the traces seem ok too. Couldn't find any serious corrosion either. So, besides from being dusty, it the board looks quite ok.

Would you start trying to run it with the original 68k, given that I took the effort to solder wires to the broken pins ect? Or would the issue be more like somewhere else, like on the Denise chip or the soldered on RAM ect?

I have a multimeter and could check pins, resistors ect for correct voltage but I don't know where to start. Any hints?

Subject: Amiga and AmigaOS should move to ARM.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Seriously, the PowerPC architecture is largely dead and no longer as relevant as it was back in the 1990s and early to mid 2000s. ARM has become the next big architecture and Apple silicon is showing that ARM is a viable alternative to X86-based CPUs. It's about time the Amiga should make the move from PowerPC to ARM. It would help the Amiga become more relevant than ever and it could give AmigaOS more benefits and make it popular and not a niche OS.

Joystick mods - Do you prefer Fire 1 & 2 or Fire 1 & Jump?

I’ve started building some joysticks based on the comp pro but I can’t decide if I want 1 fire button and 1 dedicated jump button (Fire 1 and Up) or 2 fire buttons (Fire 1 and Fire 2) are there even many games that uses Fire 2? What option would you go for? 🤔

Subject: Does anyone know the name of this Amiga game about Indians/cowboys?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Unfortunately, my memory from 28+ years ago is vague, but I had a game about Indians/cowboys. For part of it, you'd ride a horse, and have to dodge and/or shoot arrows I think. The environment was like in Western movies: lots of sand, some hills.

I think it had multiple game modes, one in 2D (top view), and one in side-scroll view.

Unfortunately that's all I recall for now. Would love to see a long play..

Subject: Question about Gotek drives.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Recently got an Amiga 500 and want a gotek drive for it. I do not want to replace my internal drive, and some places seem to put a significant upcharge on "external compatible" ones.

Is a Gotek like this: https://www.amiga-shop.net/en/Amiga-Hardware/Ram-storage-media/Gotek-USB-Floppy-Emulator-for-Amiga::965.html

Able to work as external with the correct cables (besides being df0 instead of df1).

Edit: I realise the website linked says it needs an adaptor, some I've seen don't say that, and the adaptor looks just like a very pricey cable to me.

Subject: Today I asked Chatgpt about the Commodore Amiga

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Question: Was the design of the 1985 Commodore Amiga Personal Computer ahead of it’s time?

Chatgpt Response: Yes, the design of the 1985 Commodore Amiga personal computer was ahead of its time. The Amiga was designed to be a multimedia powerhouse, with advanced graphics and sound capabilities that far surpassed other computers of its time. It was also one of the first computers to offer multi-tasking, allowing users to run several applications at once.

The Amiga's innovative design was due in large part to the team of engineers and designers who worked on it, many of whom were former Atari employees. They incorporated cutting-edge technology, such as a custom graphics chip and a pre-emptive multitasking operating system, that made the Amiga stand out from other computers on the market.

Despite its advanced features, the Amiga was not initially a commercial success due to poor marketing and distribution. However, it developed a devoted following among enthusiasts and was eventually adopted by the video and film industry for its advanced graphics and video editing capabilities.

Overall, the design of the 1985 Commodore Amiga personal computer was ahead of its time and played a significant role in shaping the development of multimedia computing.
