Subject: Considering purchasing an Amiga

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Newish to Commodore with recently purchasing 2 original Vic 20s (one a two prong), the C64 Maxi and the A500 Mini. Looking to purchase a real Amiga. Any advice? I'm in the US so NTSC region and I know most games are PAL. And I already have one NTSC game: The Three Stooges. Aren't there models where you can switch between NTSC and PAL?

2 questions really

1) What are your favourite utilities or workbench programs that are available at aminet.

and

2) Got any favourite games that are one aminet, looks like there are many entries but very little to help you sort out what might be good

Subject: Searching for a game I played as a kid. Please help?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

My dad who passed away last year used to let me play his Amiga 1000…that said, there were so many games he had that I remember fondly.

Earl Weaver baseball, wings, lost Dutchman mine, blood money, battle tech, warlords and so many more…but one game I’m trying to find I just can’t recall the name of!

It was IIRC, a top down game where you drove a car around a post apocalyptic world. You could upgrade the car by going to shops. One thing that sticks out was a goofy looking shop owner saying “can’t help ya”.

That’s really all I can remember.

Anyone know which game I’m referring to?

Subject: trouble shooting a2000 floppy disk problem

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

hi,

I've pulled out from the basement my A2000B r4.4, after removing the battery and cleaning up everything I was really surprised that it worked absolutely fine, so I decided to buy a gotek and run some games. Everything worked well for a few days but suddenly the amiga stopped recognizing the gotek and the old DF0 as well (they were not mounted together, I just tried df0 to exclude a broken gotek). I get to the hand screen and then nothing, the drive only spins very briefly when the computer is turned on then nothing, no clicking, no spinning - the gotek is powered on but as if not connected.

I've tried swapping the CIAs, I've also tried swapping out a gary and paula with ones from another amiga (not sure if that works 100% tough, however I got exactly the same problem).

I've read that it could be the 74ls38 (u203), however from the A2000 schematics it does not seem to control the drive motor (it does in the A500 but A2000 can mount 2 internal drives and has a bit more circuitry) - I will try to replace it tough as it's a cheap part but not really confident.

Any suggestion on what kind of troubleshooting I could do?

Subject: Does anyone know if FS-UAE for Linux actively being supported?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I was looking on the FS-UAE site and it appears that they really haven't done anything since (Ubuntu) 18.x. I am curious what (if any) active support there is for FS-UAE.

Subject: Strange floppy disk drive problem.

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

strange problem with floppy drive. when I load the first floppy into my Amiga 500 no problem, the game / program loads without any issue, but when I am asked to change the floppy disk, the amiga will not read the next floppy disk. I googled in search of a topic but I did not find such a problem. So what could it be?

Subject: People in Canada - Did you know anyone with an Amiga?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I sure didn't. I didn't even really know what an Amiga was until the 2000s. I think I recall seeing advertisements for them in magazines but I just thought it was some strange eurotrash computer lmao.

Computers back then were already expensive, plus the Canadian dollar PLUS retailer markup made buying computers and parts here out of reach unless you had disposable income. I'm still kind of bitter about this. Example, a sound blaster 16 after tax was over $200 USD here in 1995. And that's in 90s dollars.

Small update on the Cherry MX prototype for the A1200

We got some of the cheaper keycaps in, as well as the last of thr Chips for the PiStorm mods!

We hope to have a working prototype for the rest of the Amiga's soon as well.

The A1200 has no logic on the keyboard, which is why this one was the first to be made. The other Amiga's (500, 2000, 3000, 4000) have logic IC's, which we are still waiting to arrive.

As for the A600... we have not seen anything yet, but since there seems to be a lot of love for this project, I will probably design a keyboard PCB myself if there is enough demand for it.

Subject: Anyone ever able to take off in Rocket Ranger?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I remember loving this game as a kid and I was thinking of giving it another try on an emulator in the next day or two. I still have the old code wheel! However I remember never being able to take off. I believe you had to push the joystick from side to side and time it to a sound but I could never do it. I wasn't sure if i was pushing left when i should have pushed right or if i was pushing too early or late. Does anyone have any tips to help me make it to the moon?
