Subject: RAM upgrades in a Blizzard 1230

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Need some advice on a few issues with upgrading the RAM chip in my 1230.

Since adding it to my 1200 I can now get a reasonable level of quality with ADoom (think better than the SNES port, but not as good as the PS one) and Gloom Deluxe runs in all but the highest resolution smoothly. I swear before I installed RTGMaster (note: no actual graphics card, I just saw it can run on AGA and figured it might improve things with "pseudo RTG" as it were) it was garbage on PAL Hi-Res, but since adding that it's much better, even without selecting the EHB drivers that have now appeared (which are actually worse if anything than the vanilla PAL Hi-Res, go figure).

So first question - with having the 68030 @ 50Mhz and 8MB of RAM in the Blizzard, would I actually get any benefit from more RAM, or have I already likely hit as good as I can get with that CPU?

Second one - can the Blizzard safely take double sided EDO chips? The two I have (the 8MB and a 4MB spare) are both single sided, and the biggest ones I've been able to see online in single sided form are 16MB.

Subject: Could the Amiga have been saved and lasted into the 2020's?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello there i saw a post on atariage from 2o18 about if the amiga could have lasted at https://atariage.com/forums/topic/276070-what-would-u-have-done-to-make-the-amiga-succeed-better/page/4/#comments and it was interesting, but most of it was bullshit . The one thing most do is compare it to the PC. The issue is most of the claims are bullshit. For example the Amiga has no expansions like Wintel systems...that is a lie. Full out slander against the Amiga. Even the Amiga 1000 had 1 Zorro slot and this was expanded to the 500 and the 1500. Another thing 5hat passes me off is the unfair comparisons to Pentium 3 PC's. The Amiga was dead by 1993 and they bitch about not being sound blaster 16 compatible. No one mentions the waste of money C64GS at all. I honest think if the buy out did not fail we would have had a new Amiga as early as 2002/2003. If you are going to make a comparison it would be for the Mac witch was the only true competitor to the Amiga. I think Apple would ultimately lose Europe to the Amiga. If they tried they could have Also took over Ukraine and the Middle East. The first is because they could sell old stock Amiga's there and kick out the expensive PC's. They could have sold PC's to Iran during the US embargo of US elections after 9/11 and let's be adults we know know it was Saudi Adrian not Iran that caused the attack. By 2010 there would be no Android or iOS as Apple would not have won like they did in our time line. Instead Europe and some other places would be Windows and Amiga regions. Apple would only get NA and Maybe Japan like today.

Also ARM would not be as big with no smart phones that were not Blackberrys. Powerpc would still be around and Windows Vista and on would have to support it do to its popularity in Europe. Viruses would not be as bad as they would need to target 3 popular platforms instead of two plus Linux would also still gain prominent with Amiga Unix and Latter Amiga Linux like what we saw before.

Subject: Making a joystick for the amiga: how to wire the second button and the third button as "up"

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I am making an arcade joystick for the amiga; since the old one died horribly (flew to the wall and then out of the window out of rage; long story).

Got a standard switch joystick and 3 buttons; I have all the ground connected together for all the buttons and the 4 directions of the joystick; and one wire from each of the 4 joy directions. From what I remember, most of the Amiga games run on one button; some would use 2; so the 3rd is just a "jump" button that I can use for games where there is a lot of jumping.

Looking at the 9 pin din connection I can wire 1 wire per connection; and for the jump button I was thinking to add a switch that enable either the button or the up direction on the joystick; would that work or the Amiga will get affected if signals are changed while the joystick is connected?

Subject: Amiga A1200 from Storage

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I dug up an Amiga A1200 that I had in storage. It fires up and boots to a work bench. SEE HERE.

I don't have a mouse and have no idea what size HDD is in it. The power supply weights twice what the A500 weighs.

Anyone interested in purchasing this?

I wrote a load of small programs back in the day and have been checking them out recently...trouble is I have forgotten how you end a program (quit out, stop program from within the IDE), so just reboot rhe Amiga. Does anybody know what key combination it is to quit?

Subject: Any (cheap) way to use a USB joystick on Amiga 1200?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Just wondering if there is an easy way to connect a USB joystick to an Amiga 1200. Old joystick are aging, new ones cost an arm and a leg just because they are 9 pin compatible, so I was looking for a cheap way to connect a USB joystick to an amiga.

USB joystick are everywhere; they even sell a replica of the competition pro, for a fraction of what an original one would cost, so it seems to me that the direction to go is the USB way.

Subject: Basic amiga question - Differences between models

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

So I'm on the hunt for my first Amiga, can someone shed some light on the differences between the 500 & 600 / 1200 models?

If I got an Amiga 500 will I be able to run any amiga game on it?

Apologies for the very noobish question.

Subject: Amiga 500+ Fault Diagnosing

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I have an Amiga 500 plus that like many others suffered from the dreaded leaky Varta barrel battery. The leak spread as far as Odd CIA (A) and Paula. I have removed the battery and treated it with white vinegar, de-ionised water and then l cleaned it with IPA. The sockets for Paula and Gary were very eroded and I have replaced these with new sockets.

I checked the voltages on my Amiga power supply prior to switch on and these were within the expected range. I switched on and the screen flashes a couple of times and then leaves me with a green screen and a keyboard light flashing 10 short and 1 long flash. I checked and this is a chip RAM issue.

I bought and fitted Amiga DiagROM 1.2.1 in place of the Kickstart ROM and connected up to the serial port.

It finds the CPU, OVL is working OK and then it proceeds to test the chip RAM. This is where the problems start - every test fails and whatever is written to RAM is always read back as $B895B895 at every address and the screen cycles through green, red and black.

I have felt the chips and they all feel warm with the exception of Gary which doesn't warm up at all. Gary is the closest to the battery. Could a faulty Gary cause these chip RAM issues?
