Subject: Loft adventures

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've decided to relive my youth by digging out all my amiga stuff out of the loft. Its not been touched in 20 years and theres a tonne of stuff which I'm still going through

It was a hobby for my late father and I and brings back great memories to see it all again.

It turns out there are actually two amiga 1200s, if I recall correctly a friend gave us his one after he got a pc.

Anyway... I got around to seeing if they boot. The first one I tried works but it seems the floppy drive is possibly dead. Every floppy gives the message "Not a Dos disk in device"

The second one I tried which was our main one with a HDD and memory expansion did not want to work at first. I was getting the HDD spin up and a beep several times before it then went into kick-start. After opening it up and checking connections, reseting the memory expansion the HDD started spinning correctly (if a bit noisily) but then started getting yellow screens on boot.

After removing the memory expansion it successfully booted into workbench on the HDD! Everything seemingly how we left it all those years ago.

To the seasoned veterans here, do you think the expansion card is dead or do you have any recommendations of what to try?

Here's some photos of the card: Expansion Expansion back

Subject: It seems my Gotek / HxC can't find adf files [question]

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello community,

I've recently pulled out my Amiga 500 from the attic and (besides the damaged RAM Module) it is in quite good shape.

Sadly my Workbench floppies are in a not so god shape. There is some read/write error (also on my "Copy of Workbench" Floppy). Other Floppies are also not readable except one Pacmania floppy that I have and an other game with a construction worker. So I think I can rule out a defective floppy drive.

Because of this I ordered a Gotek Floppy Emulator and installed FlashFloppy 3.24. which has the FF_Gotek-v3.24 Firmware installed and I copied the HxC_Compat_Mode Files (HXCSDFE.CFG and the Amiga AUTOBOOT.HFE). The USB Thumbdrive/Stick I use for the Gotek is an USB 3.0 8GB FAT32 formatted one.

When I start the Amiga 500 the black "welcome screen" is shown. After a few seconds it changes to the file selection menu, but it states that the sd-card/usb drive is empty - or at least it doesn't list any files (beside the fact that the 3-Digit-Screen counts up to the 4, which I think represents the 4 adf-Files). On the USB thumb are (at the moment) 4 files and I already tried some other files, but those were also not listed.

I think this is kind of a strange behavior and I couldn't find any information on the web for this behavior. Is this a known behavior? Is this some behavior of a mistake I made?

I hope somebody can give me at least a hint, so I can use my Amiga 500 again.

Subject: Gotek flash floppy Amiga 600 media attach failed

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

As the title says. Got a gotek installed. I know it’s installed correctly as I have a 16gb Sandisk usb drive that works fine with it. I bought a 64gb ultrafit sandisk usb and put flash floppy on it. Same files and auto boot from my working sandisk (literally just copied the files across) I formatted the ultrafit with rufus to fat32. Files read ok in computer. Gotek can see the drive and load the firmware and get into splashecreen of flash floppy but then it says “media attach failed” and I can’t navigate files or anything. Any ideas? Is there an upper limit for the size of flash drive the gotek can read?

Subject: Advice? A2286 and ISA IDE hard drive controller in A2000

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi everyone..

I've made a lot of progress on my A2000 project, I have a working, bootable machine with just a few more tweaks left to do.

Trying to get an A2286 to talk to a IDE controller board on an ISA slot. It's a winbond W-606 ( found a manual!) Right now I have everything but the FDC and HDC disabled. the A2286 boots with the ISA slot empty, to a VGA board that drives an external monitor. I also have a sound card in it for eventual use as a old 286 gaming PC (a SB pro clone, I can do limited tests from basic dos to prove it works).

PC side will not start with the controller board in. I've disabled the floppy port on the A2286 and turned off all the ports I can on the controller card. I'm trying to boot from a IDE-CF adapter with an old 500mb card eventually... but that has little impact, it does not boot with or without the card on the IDE bus. All I can immediately think is the IDE cable I have isn't "old enough" to make the controller happy (UDMA/40wire/etc), but I do see the little CF board light up appropriately.

Is there some jumper I missed to tell the A2286 to look elsewhere for a hard drive? After the last re-install I did NOT install MakeAB because I do not want to use a virtual hard drive.

I've tried installing the latest AmigaJanus software... should I try a reinstall after doublechecking all the controllers settings? Or am I missing something? (I could get an XT-IDE on a network card or something, but I'd have to give up VGA or sound card to do it). Should I put the controller board right next to the bridgeboard in order, or something?

Thanks!
