Subject: Update script finished with Linux extraction error 101 - MiSTer no longer booting

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi all,

I ran the update script and right at the end it downloaded linux but failed with an extraction error and performed a reset, now the MiSTer won't boot. Yellow and Red lights (left and right) just pulse.

Has anyone seen this before and know of a fix? Or will I need to restart the build?

Cheers

Subject: Is a cheap import recommendable?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I hope it is okay to post these questions here. I was just wondering where to buy a MiSTer from. In my country (Germany) it is sometimes sold for upwards of 400 Euros in a basic configuration.

On the other hand importing it from China via ebay seems much cheaper:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/225053154298?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110018%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.COMPLISTINGS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200818141841%26meid%3Dec4cc0b0d7a146c69a3647a09834a1fd%26pid%3D101111%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D373829657615%26itm%3D225053154298%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2563228%26algv%3DThematicAlgo%26brand%3DUnbranded%2FGeneric&_trksid=p2563228.c101111.m2109&amdata=cksum%3A225053154298ec4cc0b0d7a146c69a3647a09834a1fd%7Cenc%3AAQAHAAABALwVoSbxFsxNTl7u%252B0ZoqBb8wsFKSseKMgG%252Fst7%252FAOT7nUt%252FVMvHIZJpJK%252Bxi9wtEoALq4s6nMTyma9AkZFslgjiOsuUZDNfGjnqW8o927hsKt6dgbLkIUpT3TpINB4%252Bd9aeYg6iszxq%252FvdhCd9kQWemfejr8UocNraFz5xTFgs4B2CJwatqdaD73rhLpA3%252F%252BZDbXCOHtrgyLzMW6QHSYLNiEl5SPVwkvd4IHnYgRLuvPtZ59DjyFp76gSI828i6u9NmLPoHA3MNCe4Wo4dc4JKkfEOe9NImt7%252Bit1ET7%252BgTzimUkZVVNCPoAyvJdWjF%252FattbbWQBPjiB8xkZmEwjB8%253D%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2563228

Now that is a long URL. They offer the FPGA IO board in a nice white metal case and everything else(?) you need for around 170 Euros. Add 46 Euros for customs (and long waiting times but I don't care) and we are at 216 Euros. All I want is to connect a Xbox USB controller to the thing and start playing Neogeo games (no original controllers needed for me).

My questions are:

  1. Do I need more RAM for NeoGeo games?
  2. Will it recognise a standard XBox One controller connected to USB?
  3. Would the above offer be enough to play or is there a catch?
  4. It does not need soldering to put everything together, does it?
  5. I need an additional SD card for storage, don't I? What is the max size it can read?
  6. Sometimes the versions of single parts are mentioned. Is that important? Are earlier versions buggy or something?
  7. Are there better fans? Are those controlled like with a PC or are they always running? I am a big fan of quiet devices and would pay more for a good replacement fan if this is too loud. If have seen configurations only with a heatsink. What about that?

400-600 Euros is too steep for me, but if I can get it for cheaper I would consider it. It just seems weird that every review says it was much more costly to get it when there are offers like the above. Thank you for reading!

Subject: Noob with no prior experience with mister needs help with troubleshooting setup

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I bought parts from misterfpga.co.uk and assembled them according to this video I have the analog i/o board 6.1 and usb hub v2.1.

https://youtu.be/SoRFALqCtkI

I then bought a sandisk ultraa microsdxc 512 mb sd-card and installed mister on it following these instructions:

https://ezcontents.org/mister-fpga-vintage-computing

When I plug it into my asus pg27uq and plug in power adaptor in wall outlet the red an green leds on the i/o board starts blinking. Then, the yellow led blinks three times and then the red and green led continues blinking forever.

I am talking of the three leds close to the buttons. The red one close to the line out is lit the whole time.

Could someone please help troubleshooting this?

what to do to bus-power everything.

I'm not to well versed in the electrical side and hope some of you can help me. I want to have everything powered through the mister like e.g my external 2.5" ssd.

The reason being I want to have less clutter from additional power sources for hdd and usb hubs.

So is there a limit to how many Amps you can provide through a stronger adapter? ( for example I was looking at the adapter in the picture I provided )

Blurry console text

When I first built my Mister about a year ago, all the text when running scripts etc was nice and clear, but at some point, it turned into…. This. I’ve tried almost every setting in the ini but I still get this trash looking text. Has anyone ever encountered this?

Subject: Why not have a Playdate or Pico8 core for Mister

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

While Pico8 is a fantasy console, would it be out of the question for MISTer? The playdate was also a neat idea for a core but I don't know enough about making a core to know if its possible.

Subject: MiSTer IO board external buttons for arcade cabinet project

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I'm setting up my first-ever MiSTer inside a modded Arcade1up cab, and I would like to wire up external buttons to the control panel or front-facing panel for Reset, OSD, and User. An LED might also be handy. Any recommendations for compatible buttons?

I'm having trouble getting this one to run. I have transferred the relevant files to the usual folders and usually things just work but this one doesn't boot at all. Not sure if I've missed something but I've done manual installs before with no issues. Thanks

Subject: HDMI not working immediately after launching PSX core…

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I updated my MiSTer using update_all. When updating was complete, I launched the PSX core but then the HDMI signal was immediately lost - I can’t get it back on. I tried checking the ini file, I couldn’t see anything amiss. I’ve tried another HDMI lead. I then wiped the card and reinstalled MiSTer but still can’t get a picture.

I will try another SD card tomorrow but I don’t think it’s that, as it works fine in my laptop 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’m crossing my fingers that the HDMI output on my De10 Nano hasn’t been fried 🫣

My Samsung tv is showing both the blue tick and red standby icon on the HDMI source when the MiSTer is turned on…

Subject: Guncon on jvs arcade machine

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi All I want to run a guncon on my mister outputting to a 15khz arcade monitor using vga.

Will it work if i output 240p via hdmi>vga adapter > arcade monitor and grab sync from the analog out >scart to one of those adapters that extracts sync? Anyone got a different solution that does work if not?

Thanks

Subject: SNAC electrical protection

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

If I am not mistaken, most SNAC boards use mosfet based bidirectional voltage level translator.

Now, I know with SNAC no conversion is done so each core must be matched with its controller.

But let's suppose a user starts a nes core with a genesis controller still plugged after running a genesis game.

In this case the nes core will try to toggle user IO 0 and 1 (clock and latch for the nes snac), but if either up or down are pressed, those lines are held low by the high side of the voltage level translator.

Now, my question is, will that damage the FPGA? Will the FPGA pin will be pulled high with consequent high current draw from the mosfet pulling low?

Or is the output pin set up to work in "open collector" fashion and does it never actively pull high, but let the pull up resistors do that work?
