I would like to see all like or dislike buttons removed from the world.

I agree - I miss the downvote button when I do go on TheOriginalWallOfHate(tm) these days.

I think upvote/downvote would be awesome. I think the problem is the same reason you can't edit messages once they've been posted. This is really just a big mail server, and each post is actually just a group e-mail, I think. Once they're posted and sent, they can't be modified.

One thing this BBS seriously needs is a 'like' button, or maybe a pair of 'Upvote' and 'Downvote' buttons. Or maybe I'm just too spoiled by FarceBook.

I do enjoy the ability to react to things with positive or negative feedback.  I think I like downvoting even more than upvoting, though I do tend to upvote more often.

I'm just spoiled by FaceBook! and by having run my own Citadel, back in the day, with Gary (Otto robots) available to make modifications on demand (most of the time - I couldn't get him to try networking Citadels). I was too lazy to teach myself C - I went the other way from BASIC, to 4G languages for databases. Retired too long, now, and remember the accomplishments, but not the means. *sigh* I'm the old man - Metallica is the kid, even if he did make more than I did. I didn't want to go into management.

Metallica is an old man too... and ran out of career before he ran out of bills. He just married a bright gal that became an executive.

Good luck and good timing are as important as good skills and great work ethics - maybe more.

You're probably right about luck being important, but I'm too old to worry about it anymore. I'm happy with where I am, except for still wanting to live forever, and I've accepted that that's not likely to happen. I have my family (what there is of it), and still feel the love. I enjoy FaceBook, but I don't need it. It's a bit sad to admit, but I'm just kinda waiting for the next change in my existence, if there is one. Being Agnostic, I don't know if there is a God or gods, or a soul. For all I know, I might just cease to exist, entirely, when my body dies, although I hope that my existence will continue. I love my Fantasy and Science Fiction books, and have a head full of possibilities, but I'm in no hurry to get there any quicker than nature intends. It just gives me something to think and talk about while I wait. I'm very lucky that I don't have a lot of pain, at this point in my life, and have become accustomed to the pain that there is. Life is no longer exciting, but it's still good.

You guessed everyone BUT Gary.  Although you did mention Gary frequently.  Which was one of the clues I offered you along the way.  Just no name...

But now you should understand my insights into Sacramento Citadelphia  lore, since I was a primary member, if not the founder member (although at the push of Jerry).

I had some moments of facing my mortality in my 40's. At this point, I realize that I just blinked, and the memories are as fresh as yesterday, and 30 years went by, and at 50, I'll be lucky if I have 30 good years left. Considering the miles I've put on the engine - it is more likely that something major goes out sooner rather than later. I've been on heart meds to control my heart rate since I was 16. I've been on borrowed time for at least 20 years.

I call myself agnostic - but I've got a pretty strong faith that intelligent design is evident in the universe - and a very strong philosophical faith that we do not understand the meaning of sentience and self-awareness and perception of "reality".

It doesn't make sense that creation would exist, and that we would be able to contemplate it, and even reverse engineer it to a very deep extent - and that when we die, that experience just becomes *nothing*. There is a futility to that which is depressing. That random matter could arrange itself in such a sequence that it could contemplate its own mortality? That is a stranger universe than one created by God.

Pascal's wager says bet on God. But bet on it being beyond anything you could comprehend. I think there is a good chance we're part of a multidimension universe and while you can see down a level, you can't see up one - and the perception of a limited existence may only apply in this dimension - whatever we are, we may be timeless.

Of course, we might just be a simulation so carefully crafted that we don't realize we're the NPCs.

In any case - as I get older - there is less I want to do that I haven't already done a lot. I sometimes wonder if it were possible, if I would want to do those things anymore... if I "miss" them... because honestly - not being motivated by those things seems *better* to me.

"The want is better than the have."

I wouldn't reject career and income upward mobility - the more of this you have, the more comfortable life is. But I also know that the Bugatti in my 12 car garage on my 12 acre estate isn't actually going to make me any happier than I was with my small house in Land Park with a couple beaters in the garage. In fact, there were a lot of things about those times that made me very happy. There is also that the Porsche and private jet would have been far more "useful" at 22 than at 50.

Ohio was a big learning experience for me. I had a house... well... Here in Arizona, I went in to my dermatologists - and I got talking to the receptionist, and it came up that she lived in the same town in Ohio as I did, when she was in High School. Her little brother was my daughter's grade. So... we had never met them... but she asked where I lived and I said, "You know the big Tudor on the South side of Mudbrook just past the Dehoff house?"

And... she got kind of starry eyed and went, "That was my DREAMHOUSE when I lived there. I imagined what it would be like to live there, with that huge yard and the gardens and the forest behind it all your own..."

It had a room that was just a wetbar, with a library off that room.

I could hit 65MPH on my driveway. The garage could fit 3 cars and a riding mower and you could still open all the doors all the way.

I was a big fish in a little pond for a while.

As soon as I got a chance to leave it all and move into a house a little bigger than the GARAGE, in Arizona. I did. I stopped worrying about being in the newest, bestest Cadillac or BMW. Life *is* how you live it, what you experience - not what you *have*. We spend too much time competing with what OTHER people have achieved and not appreciating what we have, as a society. It was great getting there, but it was also where I stepped off that merry-go-round.

Maybe you have me blocked. I wouldn't be shocked.

TSBBS has always had a high tolerance for gutter talk - and really - my *wife*, who is otherwise a very proper angel, curses like a sailor.

Being a woman executive, I think you've got to develop that kind of disregard for expectations and assert a no-bullshit personality from the start, though.

At any rate - we're not a real great couple for those who don't like dirty words. She is worse than I am by a long shot - and I probably curse more freely NOW than I have at any time since my twenties. Professionally, I am a very straight-laced guy, languge-wise.

I'm so confused, then - still. :)

One of you does not show up on Facebook as a member, and I've tried to tag one of you into posts and it wasn't actually an option. I'm not sure who, or where, or when.

That has more to do with me being a little scatterbrained and Facebook being the social media version of taking a sip of water from a firehose.
