Shortly after I posted this - the one single point of failure I can't control, my ISP - went down. Evidently it was a big outage, as a coworker from my old place texted asking if I could help fix *their* internet - and we use the same ISP.

Anyhow... looks like we're back, for now.

{Raises bony hand} I'm still here. And dead.

Speaking of necromancy, I've hopefully raised my dead company from the grave. It only needed a $30,000 Raise Dead spell, but it should turn a profit at the first sales event, PAX West in Seattle. Last time we were there, we grossed 37k, so if we can match that (or even just break 25k) we'll pay off our first investor and he'll front the money for a second event. And bingo, it's rolling again. Once the business is rolling I'll be able to scale it like it deserved, and I have much better marketing skills and a team to help it scale.

This is the way, my destitute friends.

Make or do something people want more than their money. Tell them about it. Accept the money when they beg you to trade.

Or you can complain four hours a day on Facebook like my Canadian socialist friend. And nothing gets better in your life or the world. But you're morally superior, so you can cling to that. And if anything ever starts to disprove you're the Übermensch, fight it with everything you've got. Because you have nothing to keep your serotonin level up except your imagination. And if that fails, you will feel worthless. And you'll have nothing to disprove it. And that would be a tragedy.

So do something valuable for other people. They'll reward you.

Well, a couple of posts here and there are all it takes to keep this thing on life support. It only costs me about $15 a month plus incidentals - and the thing runs itself. That is part of the problem though - it is so rock solid if it breaks, it is going to take me a lot of effort to bring it back - because I've gotten completely rusty on my Linux once again.

So, you found an investor to front the $30k? You really do $30k+ of sales in one event selling gaming cards? That is crazy! Have you ever considered doing an online store?

As far as your Facebook friend - my feeling there is that this guy is annoying enough that you're bitching about him here on WallofHate - which is exactly why WallofHate exists - to give you an alternative from visiting Facebook and engaging with the toxic douchebags that are rampant on that site. If you notice - I do hit and run posts there now. I post content - I avoid interacting with people directly. There is no reward in the experience.

Had some rooms that were at max # of messages and not scrolling for some reason. Fixed that. I think this should probably have beneficial impact on the entire BBS as it should be dealing with a far smaller database of messages now. We'll see.

Yeah, I'm expecting to sell out which will gain us 70k revenue, bringing us to like 25-30k profit.  If we get to the point we can bankroll ourselves and grow, I could do this convention circuit full time and never have to get written up at work for doing my job correctly again.

In the meantime, you know anyone who's hiring?  I refuse to stay where I get written up for doing my job.

I double booked some events 30 miles apart but they're density tests which aren't time sensitive, so my trainer and previous boss told me to just put them on the schedule that way anyway.  The new boss wrote me up for "setting us up to fail" nevermind that people are already used to this and aren't losing their shit if we're early or late for density tests.

My written response on the form was "hire more people so I don't have to double book"

As far as what I'm looking for, preferably something that pays well.  I'm skilled in management, troubleshooting, helpdesk, programming, all kinds of things.  I have a very wide base of knowledge with not much experience in anything lol

I can learn anything as long as it's not boring as fuck.

This sounds like a similar theme to my work experience. Jack of all trades, not interested in being a master at any of them, and not scoring very high on the agreeableness chart - especially when I feel the victim of injustice or false persecution.

Like, reading your response made me have flashbacks. Corporate PTSD.

I've been having hellscape dreams lately. For a while the dreams were really good. Right lately they've been terrible - this morning's cinematic masterpiece was that I had rented several apartments for some reason, I was a young adult... we had gotten in some sort of problem with Russian intelligence - they had kidnapped an IT guy I worked with in Ohio (which I hadn't worked at yet...) and something had gone wrong with my relationship with Angelina. That is all I remember about it - but in the dream, you know how you know the entire backstory of experience - all the memories - even if you didn't dream them? It had been a *really* bad period - and I was breaking down. I was defeated.

I wonder if it could be the effect of social media, and Twitter in particular. I had a pretty decent weekend - but my simple, carefree, DGAF approach to life doesn't seem to go bone deep like it normally does right now. Obviously my subconscious is working through some shit.

I'll check around and see if I can find you something. You may want to reach out to AppleOne locally - they've got gigs for skilled entry and mid-range office type work coming up all the time. They're local.

A little unscheduled downtime today. The guy cleaning my AC returns and Dryer vent unplugged the entire system, and I thought I had brought it back up, but evidently it requires a little bit of manual intervention I had forgotten about to get the server started up again.

Still more robust than any enterprise environment I ever ran for Intel... score 1 for Linux.

I had the unique pleasure of visiting in person with Thanatos this evening along with a dozen other family members. We had a walk by the river, got to sing some songs while I enthusiastically flopped my hands around on the piano, and caught up on family and career progress.

I also got to take my kids to Fairy Tale Town, drive them across the Tower Bridge, around the capitol, through the Fabulous 40s, and show them the chapel where my wedding reception was held. It was a beautiful day, if too hot for too long. Sometimes you get a Delta Breeze at 5:30, somtiems 7pm. Today was the worse option. But we had banana-lime malts at Gunther's and Rebecca Whipple's toasted marshmallow brownies. So it was a pretty sweet day.

So far the card game thing is still on track. The card manufacturer isn't really on the ball, which freaks me out. But they're still promising delivery the day before the convention. And as The Dave mentioned, if we pull this off we can double our money or better in one weekend, which is insane and beautiful.

The cards have a companions app that we seem to be on track to resurrect as well, which would be amazing. It's been dormant for five years.

The most important things--cards, a booth, and personnel (with hotel and airfare) are already locked in and paid up. Card readers need to happen ASAP. Velvet for the tables, some decent banners, and a few other niceties should be affordable and in hand pretty soon. It's all coming together.

Sweet. Days like you describe are excellent - although as far as complaining that the delta breeze didn't arrive until 7 pm... it *never* arrives here in Phoenix. :)

I'm going on a trip to Ohio in September for a week, then flying directly to Sacramento for 2 weeks, and then driving back to Phoenix from there. I have reservations about 2 weeks in Sacramento. I'm not sure what I'm going to be able to do to keep myself occupied for 2 weeks - but, we'll figure it out.

It is kind of interesting that my Citadel, the last Sacramento Citadel - has really become a family destination for the Sacramento LDS Modem community. I'm not sure that this would have been the prediction for The Sanitarium circa 1987.

So, you're a Gunthers person, not a Vic's person?

Evidently they're moving the zoo to a new facility outside of Land Park. I kind of miss hearing the lions roaring on a hot summer night in August.

Hilariously, I think that letting his boss know the next day that I would be looking for something else made him talk to John because I've been running way over what's "acceptable" on the timeline for getting the schedule out and he hasn't said a single word about it.  I'm pretty sure I can get away with murder again, not that I ever try to abuse my position.  They're chronically understaffed and telling them I'm happy to walk away makes them scared.  I got a 6 dollar raise last time I pointed out what I'm worth and that I could make the same money they were paying me by working for Taco Bell.  Now I'm showing them how I could automate my position if they let me have access to the code for our proprietary scheduling software.  They don't seem keen on it, which is funny and annoying at the same time.

Thanks for the tip on AppleOne.  I'll check them out.

In the mid 90s I worked at MCI. There was a guy there named Michael James - and we were talking about how incompetent the leadership was, how pointless the work was, how demoralizing the whole thing was. The pay was very good.

He was a black dude. I asked him how he put up with it, and he looked at me and said, "I smile and take the money."

There is a simple beauty in that logic.

I'm all for smiling, taking money, and/or both.

We successfully re-launched Japanese: The Game!

Sales at the first event were just enough to get us to the next event, but now we have inventory in hand for 2-4 more events.

TheDave absolutely nailed the role of Convention Master, and he'll do an even better job once he has all the tools he needs. Apparently flying a man a thousand miles to a hotel which may or may not let him sleep there can be anxiety-provoking. Aren't humans fascinating?

Anyway, the next event should deliver enough revenue to position us for a good Q4.
