Some things may be broken. Especially older things. Files uploads are lost, I think. But the messages seem to be here... we'll see how this works.

Uploads should work better, though.

And things should be zippier. We've got 8GB of memory and an i5 quad core instead of 2GB and an ARM dual core.

But this is kinda shaky. I don't really know what I'm doing with Linux.

Ok. I forgot about the frickin' suspend/hibernation mode. Disabled that shit. It shouldn't disappear again. Probably nobody missed it.

And I've got a spare that is a little beat up as a test system.

I love seeing that Pi. To think that's a global communications device with a whole bulletin board system on it. It's some Buck Rogers magic, right there.

It is really cool that a brand new device for under $80 could run this BBS for several years and do a pretty decent job at it.

But it is also super cool that the i5 NUC I migrated it to was $125 used, plus another $20 for the 240gb SSD I upgraded it to, and is an entire i5 in a box not much bigger than the Pi itself.

We'll see how reliable the i5 is over the long haul though - there is a lot more complexity involved in it, and a lot more heat.

The amazing thing is that the boxes I used to buy to run a Citadel box cost $2000, had a 140mb hard drive, 640mb of RAM, and weighed 40 pounds, and only one person could access them at a time, over a phone line, at 2400bps.

The evolution of The Sanitarium/The Amiga Archives - has been an incredible one.

I may have to start living up to the Amiga Archives part of the legacy of this BBS, too. That might generate more traffic.

So, the images and attachments are working right, does the BBS seem quicker, more responsive, than it was on the Pi, or about the same?

Is the bottleneck the system, or the 5mb up connection? It feels quicker to me, more responsive, but that could just be a placebo because I know it is on more powerful hardware now.

The images loaded easily albeit nostalgically slow. Maybe 5-8 seconds on my Note20 Ultra 5G. My connection is gigabit over wifi, so I'm like 380 down 250 up or something like that. So there's probably nothing slowing me down and I'm getting performance I remember from 2005-2008 on normie sites.

Yeah, file transfers should certainly feel a little nostalgic - mostly on account of that I have a whopping 5mb pipe up... total.

You kids are going to have to put a lot more traffic on here and start making me some money before you get more bandwidth than that, though. :)

Files and file directories are all restored. I believe file uploads, especially of larger files, should work much better now. If you had been trying to upload files in the past and struggled with it, give it another shot. Let me know if you have any issues.

The system only has a 240mb SSD. On reconsideration, I should have just taken the plunge and bought a 1TB drive on Black Friday. That'll have to wait, now.
It won't be difficult to add an external SSD, though.

This BBS is rad... the i5 is rad.

It would be WAY rad if you fuckers started using it. It has so much potential... but content is king.

Uploading profile pictures now works. This might be helpful in allowing us to better understand what names go to what faces, so I encourage it.

Made some changes on the server. Was unhappy with their results. Changed back. Unhappy with those results, too. Had to reboot the server. A little scary there for a few minutes, but we're back.

Sorry for any disruptions or strange behavior. Lesson learned about "just giving it a shot in production and seeing what happens."

I mean, I know that lesson - but I figured it was a safe gamble here. It wasn't.
