Is there a room for complaining about intersectionality? I still don't feel like Gab is safe enough.

Not yet. Make one. Let's have an "intersectionality" room. I'm ready to see what that looks like, and how it pans out. This is a grand experiment in anti-social networking.

If you log in via Telnet - by the way - I think that you show up as "localhost"... because you Telnet into my server and then connect from the local client to the Cit-Server - which means that your IP won't show up in the userlist on the Webserver - you'll show up as local host. So if you're security conscious about this kind of thing - the LEAST secure, least encrypted way - may be the most secure way to do it. Just for your consideration.

You need to download and install putty.

Then put

"telnet.wallofhate.com"

Into the address field and change to port 23.

https://www.putty.org/

A
ssuming you are on Windows, not Mac or Linux.

The challenge seems to have become that modern social media has shifted the demographics to where a BBS has become a "net consumer" environment. That is, 8 out of 10 users are actually net content consumers, not producers. They read, but they don't contribute.

Citadel, when it existed, was a magnet for content producers. 8 out of 10 users were active content producers - which created a tremendous volume of posts.

We're going to have to get that kind of interaction back. This isn't like Facebook - there aren't enough users to have a majority of lurkers.  Introversion won't get the job done here.

You gotta post. In multiple rooms, on every visit. Create rooms that are interesting to you. Start conversations here - even if you've also started them other places like Facebook and Twitter. Even if they say the exact same thing.

Watch...

much with it at all anymore... and second off - I think he has
decided I am a luser because he didn't like the n00b questions I was
asking when I was trying to figure out how to get this poorly

Nope! I just have limited time right now because of work commitments. Citadel development often happens in big lurches and sprints (not the Agile type of sprints). Citadel will never die!

Thanks for logging in, Ig! (and reading ALL the messages in the lobby!) I was just frustrated and pulling out my hair - I really wasn't as upset at you as I was at the silence from other people in the community, on that message board. It shouldn't be ALL on your shoulders to support everybody with questions.

To that end, I've bought another Pi and I am going to work on a HowTo document for installing on Raspian - with the caveats I'm not Linux guru *and* this Citadel is kind of broken in a couple minor ways (inline images still won't work, neither will profile pictures, but links to externally hosted images will). It may be broken in bigger ways I just don't know enough about to realize, too, of course. :)

In the process though - I refreshed myself on Linux quite a bit and I feel like I have a lot better concept of how Citadel Groupware works than I would have if it had been a clean, troublefree install that didn't need any troubleshooting.

Anyhow, sorry I was being bitchy about it here. I didn't expect you to ever see my whining. :D

There's a bit of brokenness in WebCit right now, maybe more than a bit, which is why we're in the process of rebuilding it on a completely new foundation.
A lot of developers did a lot of different experiments on a code base that came into existence when I really didn't know what I was doing, and it's become unmaintainable.

The server core is Really F***ing Solid (tm). The web interface, on the other hand ... let's just say the problems are well understood, and we've learned a lot over the last 23 years.

Censoring your curse words is strictly optional here. We don't card at the door, but if a kid sneaks in, he or she is going to get what they fucking deserve for coming to a place designed for grownups when they shoulda known better.

;)

But if it is a personal preference - we're not going to force you, either.

It works a lot better than Citadel-UX ever worked for me. I had a lot of trouble managing it, getting it installed and set up - the whole thing was a much steeper learning curve. Linux and Linux apps overall have improved remarkably over the last 10 years in accessibility.

But some of the things I'm running into, especially in the web-server integration... I have no idea where to even begin troubleshooting. So... I hope you get the free time to do the development you need to... because overall this is a great platform - but I'm sure there are things that can be improved.

All this time later, I still have a vivid memory of an old 612 BBS I used to dial in to where you could set a banner that would show up by the prompt.

One time someone set it to "HOLY SHIT YOU MOTHERFUCKER>" and it made me laugh my ass off. For many years I had a hard copy printout from one session with that banner on it and would chuckle every time I saw it. I wish I still had it, must have thrown it out when I came across some old stuff and got paranoid that I'd get in trouble for having a 90's printout of "The Anarchist's Cookbook".
LOL.

When I think of all the contraband data I've collected over my career in crawling through the dirty back alleys of the information highway - that I eventually threw away because I went, "Well, this isn't something I'd like to have to explain having a text copy of stored on my hard drive..." it kind of speaks to how much human data has been destroyed because of fear of having information that wants to be free, that other people do not want to be so.

Probably hundreds, if not thousands of man-years of work and knowledge... like a library of Alexandria destroyed over and over again since the beginning of recorded human history.

There is a C-64 BBS... afterlife.dynu.com 6400 (telnet only) that gives users the ability to enter things that come up at the prompts - and in true oldschool C-64 BBS fashion - some of the blurbs are "Hit any key to disconnect" and "+++ATH0"... etc... and when I first started "dialing in"... the prompts tricked me several times.

That image looked promising. Did I understand correctly that it's only possible to display images if they're hotlinked?

"Really," what? The deleted contraband, or the C-64 BBS with the funny prompts that fooled me?

Which image?

On Ignatius's BBS - uncensored.citadel.org - you can put an inline hotlinked image, or an attachment, and they'll both work...

On mine, only hotlinked images hosted outside will work. If you upload an image as a linked attachment - it'll break... but if I make the room a directory room and you upload it as a file, you can view it or download it and that will work.

I don't know why. Ig seemed to indicate that there are some things fundamentally borked with the Citadel engine and he knows it - and he is in the middle of a redesign that will fix those things. At least, that was my interpretation. I could be wrong. I had just assumed I had fucked something up when I was stumbling through installing this because I'm not very good at Linux permissions - which is usually how I break things in *nix systems.

What I'm saying is, if we're stuck on a tropical island full of escaped dinosaurs and you reboot the system and it is a *nix system...

We're probably all going to die while I'm looking up the man page on chmod.
