If I can keep the BBS accessible from the outside, that will help - and adding the tunnel and getting rid of redirects and error messages about security and making sure it is always there will help, a lot.
Thanks. You've got to be tricky about listing the NAME of the site. Fucking Facebook.

Also, I'll be checking into the BBS daily, multiple times, so if a DHCP renewal comes up, it won't be down for long before it is back...

But within the week, I'll have a static IP address solution that will solve the problem permanently - you'll be coming directly to or or and skipping the redirect through completely.

That'll have all kinds of benefits, not the least of which will be higher availability.

So, a Citadel really isn't about file sharing, and it isn't ideal for lurkers.

You've got to post. It is really the precursor to the message forum.

At this point it is mostly the rest of you eavesdropping on TheDave and I IMing one another.

Bernhard and David, you're going to have to convince your friends that this is a better place to have your Libertarian leaning conversations than Facebook. This is basically an Alternativenet - free from cookies, advertisers, censorship, deep corporate interests.

This *is* digital Anarchism.

You know I may *disagree* with you - but I'm very, very unlikely to impose my veto power as the king of this kingdom, unlike Jack and the Facebook Moderator Army.

Ok. Well, if you guys aren't going to enter any messages - I figured out a way to pretend there are vibrant conversations and interesting links being posted, anyhow. Fuck all y'all. ;)

It is, and definitely lurk more than post.  Also don't log in on a regular basis.  I love confusing the algorithms so they have no idea what to show me :)

We are transitioning from the DHCP address to a static one. The BBS may reboot a couple of times. If there are any issues, let me know.

Is the permanent Static IP address for

It will not change, and it will always resolve to this BBS. It is a secure SSL connection - but there are cert issues so it will say it is insecure still. is the straight HTTP unencrypted connection.

You can also ssh to it at this address.

I'll get DNS records updated so that the redirect to is removed and it will resolve directly to this IP address, this weekend.

In a nutshell, we're not going to have to worry about dynamic DNS and the Citadel being on a DHCP lease through my ISP, and that making it disappear everytime my ISP DHCP lease renews. That problem will go away.

Now the frightening part, changing all of the DNS records to remove the DDNS redirects and make come directly to the IP address.

That is bound to cause disruption of services as DNS records propagate out. Also, as an end user, your DNS cache may cause it to fail to resolve even after the update is pushed out.

And I can't afford to lose the few users who seem to be logging in intermittently - or disrupt the entry I just got published on the Telnet BBS web page.

But if I wait too long - the address I am on will have a DHCP renewal, and that will cause the same end result.

I'll probably do the change later today - and there may be a disruption of service. Writing down the IP address above and using that should get you here regardless of if there is a DNS resolution disruption - so I recommend that, just as a backup. If you point your system at or or and you don't get anything - try with straight IP address. That should prove that we're still here.

If you note any weirdness with DNS resolution, and you can get in via IP address, please do and let me know what is going on.

Some of you have my personal contact info - and if nothing is working, contact me that way.

It looks like for now, the less disruptive way to achieve my goal is to simply use the static IP in place of the dynamic one with DDNS. It is kind of a redundant way to do it - but the logic of figuring everything else out so that everything resolves right at my registrar host records will be more difficult, and I'm not exactly an IP networking expert. I understand enough to be a systems guy who can tell the network guys what he needs to happen - and to do some basic networking configuration myself.

The big win is that the BBS won't go down when my ISP renews my DHCP lease until I manually update it with the DDNS service. From a networking perspective - it isn't the most efficient way to have this set up... but fixing it requires me to change host names, change DNS entries, change DDNS entries, and will entail an extended downtime of the BBS - which I don't really want to do right now being that I've already lost a pretty active user base because of disruptions already.

But as far as I can tell, from the outside everything seems to be working right, at the moment.

While I seem to be able to get in from the outside, tested through various different means, I do not know that any of the rest of you can - and it may be because you need to flush your cache - you may be redirecting wrong.

And there is no real way to tell you without logging onto Facebook.

Hopefully this resolves itself soon and I see some other users logged in.

I think that if you're trying just it is failing.

But is working.

Bugs to work out.

telnet resolves, secure doesn't.

Thanks, Ig! I'm biting the bullet and pulling the redirection and SPDNS part completely out of it... I've got the standard HTTP working...

So, here is what is happening.

If you go to you get a webpage running on Apache. If you click on the links, one takes you to which works.

Oh. I think I just figured it out. Let me check.

Ok. Yeah...

Here is my problem. I'm kinda a DNS idiot.

So, because I was originally getting my IP from DHCP - I was using a forward from my registrar though so, I had set it up so that redirected to redirected to

And redirected to

And those all had my DHCP lease from my ISP.

Make sense?

But now... I'm not sure how to make those cname aliases work... but, if you just put in with those ports, they all work fine.

Of course, it still throws up a cert error with - probably because I made the cert and machine hostname tsbbs when I built the machine, if I had to guess.

Ok. This is going to be a work in progress. But people should be able to get connected.
