What camp did you take the kids to? So... how many kids do you have at home with you and the wife right now? Just one, right? You have 4?
"But - she did call me later to apologize - which is literally a first."
Awww yeahhhhh. I love it when improvement like that happens.
My wife is traumatized because her father was kicked out of the house for misdemeanor-level bad choices. So she worries that if she ever screws up it'll be cataclysmic. I'm not sure where the chicken or egg of anxiety is in that question, but basically she hasn't been admitting fault when she's nervous, which is when she mosbehaves. But (praise Allah) she's been apologizing sooner and sooner after her outbursts. Last night it was only two hours! XD One of these days I'll be able to tell her "you're behaving in a way you would never accept from anyone, which means you know it's wrong" and she'll agree with me. Maybe in 30 years, idk.
We have six kids and we've been home since Saturday night. It was a Model UN thing. I'm an anarchist, but experience with amateur politics is even more important when you're not outsourcing it to some foppish legal rhetorician. They had an amazing time. No consequences and yet a real glimpse into bizarre human nature. They learned fast and strong that rumors are unreliable and people almost always seek unstated goals.
My wife is generally not prone to the kind of neurotic, insecure behavior that plagues a lot of females - and actually has more distaste for that kind of behavior than I do - so she has a lot of trouble making female friends.
But, the older she has gotten - the more frequently irrational she has been, in particular with me. It has gotten so bad even my daughter has noticed it and spoken up about it.
A lot of times, she'll become so insistent on something that has no bearing with the reality of something that happened, I won't even bother to argue with her about it. Inevitably, something comes up that reveals that her memory of the event was completely incorrect. No matter how many times that happens - she'll insist the next time that I'm the one who has it wrong.
My memory, going back to when I was a toddler - is pretty consistently on spot. I'm not a photographic memory - but - I'm probably just outside the gates of that ballpark. Most people aren't even in the same State that the game is being played.
I worry about her - because her family has a history of dementia and Alzheimer's - and sometimes I wonder if some of her more abrasive, irritating behaviors that are developing could be early onset symptoms. There isn't any good way to approach that with a person though. I'm may be in for an interesting ride in the winter of my life. I suppose if that is how it turns out, it is just me finally paying interest due for an undeservedly charmed life so far.

that appears only to the orig poster. To whomever wrote this citadel
and webcit thing... do you have ANY idea how difficult it is to
retroactively implement a message edit feature that doesnt break the
shit out of the whole goddamn bbs? I am starting to think it just
might take far less time to port over the citadel code to php and
mysql or even mongodb and just leave little feeder fingers for the
text cit client. To be honest, the architecture is great. However...
I want to use modern tools to develop this further. Maybe someone
wants to join me and fork the code. I I wish I had the knowledge I
have now but at age 14 with zero to no real life responsibilities. I
would have stayed awake a whole week to release it.
I've had the same thought. I began writing the API for a BBS in Ruby, then I had to take a break from programming. This happened in 2018, but I still have the code, ready for me to return to it. I can't handle the web stuff but can do the text interface no problem. Maybe one day...
Well, we didn't call them "Forks" back then, but this is how all the SacCit/Asgard/Novucivitas stuff happened in 916... people taking original Cit80, Cit86 code and making their own localized variants that had the features they wanted.
And it looks like the two of you are set to make a Webcit/Text Client fork. Regional barriers have been broken down. I don't know that this makes it easier - because it is far more difficult to create a "local" Citadel community now. We're all global, and we're competing with all the other global social media.

Not anymore.
Good news is, that will probably never happen to you again if you remember your password.
I'm back! Busy getting a job. I am now the Director of Marketing for an exploding dev shop. Feels amazing. They're relaunching my brainchild, Japanese: The Game, and launching my brother's genius idea, a sort of plug-and-play labor market.
That is fantastic. I'm familiar with both - and they're both things with great possibilities. Hopefully they both get a good solid start this time.
Yeah - the traffic on all of the Citadels fell off a cliff, recently - but I noticed that Facebook and Reddit both had a big slowdown too. I'm not sure why - but people aren't contributing as much. There is some sort of social media plateau being reached - which - seems likely. Eventually this will crest and people will lose the novelty of it and seek other things.
Just like Farmville and Words with Friends - these things, every one of them that came before - had a shelf life.

Something is wrong with redirection/ports. Go thru your ux from start to finish. I got looped trying to log in
It does this occasionally.
Basically you type in your username and PW and it just takes you right back, right?
In my case, if I try in log in with my account all lower case, it does that - if I use upper case P upper case D, then it works.
Fixing it is beyond my pay grade. :)

Yes, for sure. But also, I think people are enjoying the chance to go outside which many states have so benevolently condescended to afford them. Timcast is a fun YouTube channel and they've noticed that when the weather is good in the more populous metropolises their views drop precipitously.

Yeah. I think Zucc has much more business acumen than Tom from MySpace, so FB bought Instagram and WhatsApp because that's the move: diversify because nothing lasts forever. Gotta keep moving with the school of fish. Turns out you can't herd them like cattle after all.
Yeah, but then his strategy was to make LinkedIn and Instagram more like Facebook... which means when one wears out its welcome, the others will probably implode too.
The truth is, someone young will innovate with something we don't see coming, just like Facebook. It has already happened to a certain extent - in that younger generations want nothing to do with Facebook. It isn't cool at all.

I'm expecting augmented reality to kick in pretty soon. Then we'll have a new petty tyrant to deal with. Some new Zucc. Although Jack Dorsey just posted a link to Anatomy Of The State, possibly the most succinct and still-relevant anarchist tract of the last century. So he might be returning to his roots. It kinda helps that he's no longer a major force in the Twitter vision.
I guess there's a chance that these tech kings will start wising up to the fact that none of this is about them. Thanks for the service, entrepreneur guy. Here's your money. We're square. Go away.
I think the tech industry in general got drunk on the idea that we were changing the world for better, extending freedom to the furthest reaches of the globe, empowering the voiceless to have a voice, starting in the early 90s.
And it *was* revolutionary for society - it was a jump every bit as significant to the development of human society as the printing press, or landing on the moon.
But - it quickly started going off the rails. We're all brilliant people in the industry - especially those of us who were on the first wave of it crashing on the shores of society. The dumbest person in tech at the start was 10 points above the average IQ in society. We're widely regarded as an industry full of arrogant, abrasive people for a justifiable reason.
And those of us who are TRULY brilliant, who have the entire package of drive, determination, leadership, intelligence, and concept... guys like Musk and Zuck, Gates and Jobs - are the worst. They don't just *know* they're better than the rest of us - and it isn't just arrogance - they *are*. They see things, they connect dots, and they also see how to get where those dots lead. They succeed so wildly *because* of their absolute, narcissistic faith in themselves.
Getting people like that to "wise up" - especially to the fact that none of this is about them... when they are at the drunkest with their success and power...
Seems like a pretty long shot.

Jobs may have been able to connect the dots and see farther ahead, but he still committed suicide by not taking proper care of himself. Musk is a genius, but he's on the autism spectrum, and occasionally puts his foot in things. Bezos is smart financially, but has recently put HIS foot in it by letting his attitude get ahead of his checkbook while suing NASA, who are unlikely to look favorably at any chance of contracting for his services. Zuck is still running over his privilege by bending the rules way too far. In my opinion, Gates is a thief who stole TRSDOS from Radio Shack, filed off the serial number, and sold it to IBM to get his start. Did I miss anyone? Oh, yeah - Not in quite the same league, but close: Phillipe Kahn, who founded Borland Software (because he misspelled the name of the Astronaut Borman, whose name he wanted to use for his company) was making a lot of money from the Paradox database, when he was sued by Lotus 123 for replicating the look and feel of their database in the Borland version, and lost the suit. To cover his losses, he sold Paradox to Word Perfect Corporation, who totally flubbed marketing it, and subsequently sold it to Corel, based in Canada. Corel had the expertise in graphics to noticeably improve the database product, but they dropped the ball, although they DID apply the Borland produced improvements to the database software that Word Perfect had failed to apply. What had been a promising product got run over by an inferior database, Microsoft's Access.
