I'm taking a vacation week. Yes, a vacation from unemployment. What does that mean? This week, instead of trying to get my real estate career moving forward, I'll play with my kids, spend time with my wife, and not have the kind of fun I associate with industrious effort. Not going to finish the greenhouse. Might do a little weeding. Anyway, it's been years since I took a whole week off, and half a year since I took four straight days, so hopefully this will be a nice break. And probably I'll be on here more.

Maybe I'll fire up the RetroPie again. I got frustrated with Armored Core, a mecha game on PS1. I think I was too clumsy in the first few missions to be able to beat the first real boss. You have to save up money, and sucking makes that very difficult because you waste expensive ammo and buy the wrong parts. The one saving grace of the game is that the merchant buys back parts at full price. Very unrealistic but a huge relief!

We haven't heard from TheDave much lately - I hope that means that he has fallen down the rabbit hole with the RetroPi I gave him recently.

I have been very active and productive. Today I managed to get a Lubuntu VNC server up that allows me to remote from my Vampire 4 Amiga into it and then use it to browse the web or run the Discord app - giving the illusion that the V4 is a much more capable machine than it actually is. I also did some research on a proxy called "theoldbrowser.com" - You enter this site as a proxy on your classic browser, and it brings up a search engine that then takes you to website versions circa 1999-2000 - allowing you to browse the OLD web on your classic machine as if you were still in 1999. Not a terrible solution, either.

Ran chores with my wife and bought a new killer ceiling fan for the back patio. I'm not sure what the measurement is, but it moves 10,400 units of air - while most fans are around 3400-7500 units. We got it installed tonight on the patio, and didn't electrocute ourselves or burn the house down.

BUT... I did find a silly single point of failure I've overlooked with TSBBS. I was switching through the circuit breakers to turn off the power to the patio, then I worked on the patio - then I came back in once I was done, and tried to log onto the BBS, and it wasn't there. First I noticed that the Lubuntu VNC server had shut down. I figured it had just hibernated - but was puzzled that it didn't power back up into the state it was in when it went to sleep.

Whoops. Going to need a UPS for TSBBS. Power failures are so rare in Phoenix - it just kind of slipped my mind that machines don't handle it well when they suddenly lose power. Sorry for the unscheduled downtime. I'll fix that sometime in the future.

I did not get to upgrading the BBS this weekend. If I try and it fails, we'll lose some content. But I do have a fairly recent tested backup. I've been simply making images of the whole disk to another 240gb SSD. It is a bit expensive - but it is convenient.

Gales like we're having tonight shut down our power often enough that I've plugged my router into a UPS. I'll almost certainly get one for my office cottage, since I intend to put a PieHole out there attached to my network, as well as a media server. Plus, and more to the point, it's my office.

I got to play with the kids for two half-hour sessions, and my youngest for about three hours besides. What else did I do today? No clue. I guess I took a short nap. Talked to my mom for a bit. Time is so weird when I don't pay attention to it.

Yesterday was productive, and I got to drink with my wife. It was a good weekend. Friday I wrecked myself so bad that Saturday was a total loss. Lately, I've been getting far less reward out of this behavior - but, my circle of friends, it is expected that we will drink very expensive whiskey until we're certain to be useless the rest of the weekend. It is the culture I've fallen into. I'm not sure why I am attracted to Italians and Irishmen as my inner circle, but it is getting harder and harder on me as I age.

Any comments or notes on the new version running? Anything that seemed broken that now seems fixed?

Seems about 30% faster, maybe more. That's all for me.

TBH, yesterday was fckng insane, literally. My workplace has absolutely nothing to do with healthcare or social work yet there were three concurrent come-aparts (psychiatric incidents) in my workplace that required police intervention. Covid is getting blamed for a lot, but I don't think it's being blamed for enough.

My in-laws finally got to stay at a hotel here in Washington for the first time in a year. They go somewhere every month. Now that they're empty nesters with two incomes, they have had increasingly fun stories to share. But then they had to take a year off. Brutal. Nothing is more frustrating to me than wanting to buy something and no one will sell it to me. But that's just a pet peeve. I've tried to rid myself of peeves, but that's one of the two remaining.

There is a global shortage of supply unable to meet demand. It was part of the problem we had with the M4. There just aren't that many floating around right now - and they get snapped up almost as soon as they become available.

👍😂🤣❤😍😍

Looks like you can, in a limited sense, respond with an Emoji in the latest version of Citadel. Not sure if it was always there, if it is a function of Chrome, or if it is something Ig added to the Citadel editor. But I thought I would share.

TheDave mainly has been playing an MMORPG and doing philanthropy for the second world. He wants to hire my son as an apprentice coder. I've been trying to catch him up on math and science to earn the privilege.

Today I got a lot of the roof onto my greenhouse. That was fun. Did homework with the kids. Furthered job negotiations for a new Japanese SEO position. Hopefully that will work.

Been listening to some people talking about the Fediverse, a distributed platform for a fresh worldwide web. It's already been around for a while, apparently. Looks like it's maturing well.

I've got a feeling if you focus - you're going to break out big enough to have the comfort you desire and not worry about your wife's career.

You've got the skillset, you've got the networking, you've got the opportunity. You just have to go after it. You and TheDave both have the talent to be in a place where you've replaced your current set of worries and anxieties with a whole different set of ones. I expect to see you both here, soon. ;)

Seriously, though. If there are things that are less than satisfactory, I think it is because you both are somewhat *comfortable* in the unsatisfactory situation - because you understand the issues of the "more satisfactory" one aren't all they're cracked up to be.

I blew the whole evening trying to migrate the Sanitarium from physical to virtual - but I learned some valuable lessons - and my gameplan is a little clearer now. I'm not going to be able to P2V this machine, unless I want to enable UEFI bios... but I'm confident I can migrate the existing Citadel to a new machine and then just transition everything over. I was trying to prevent all the setup necessary - but it is going to be a lot easier to get done on a VM than it was with this box...

I hope the thing with the Japanese SEO works out.

I don't want to be the Fediverse - I want to be the corner pub or dive bar that attracts a group of "locals".
