I just posted on FB - someone posted about how Biden is encouraging people to rat out people they suspect of being "extremists". 

And I responded - "The thing about the American revolutionaries - is they used Ben Franklin's printing presses to disseminate information - not the printing presses that were loyal to King George."

Just got zucked for 7 days for posting an "offensive image" so I'll probably be way more productive as a human.  Might even actually start in on that security class.

And the people who are using it are all, "yeah, but it is convenient and I reach more people through it than a place like this..." 

Which would have been a bad excuse, back then... 

It is one of those, "you say you want disruption and change - but I don't think you really do..." things. 

If you REALLY thought you were embracing revolutionary ideas that were disruptive to the status quo and that might cause meaningful change - you wouldn't be on Facebook - not in today's climate. 

I mean, I'm guilty too... I keep going back.

We all hate Facebook and have tried many alternatives.  We have a Gab group, a MeWe which is the most popular so far, there's a Discord group and a Minds group and essentially if it's a thing, there's a Noble Order of the Gray Duck on it.

Yeah, but aren't they all essentially the same. Gab and MeWe limit Left wing expression, Discord - I guess it matters how you manage your channel, but most channels are infested with SJW leftists...

I haven't seen them limit lefties, but I'm not on there much, you could be right about that.

But yeah, the analogy to the printing press came to me when I realized that people are basically using the King's printing services to print and publish their anti-King documents - when there are alternatives out there, and their reasoning is, "The King makes it easy, and gives me the bigger distribution." 

Yeah... but the King isn't doing that to make it *easier* for you to replace him.

Exactly. I always liked that about the BBS scene. For example, if someone set up a pro-Trump BBS, then an anti-Trumper would know what to expect, and the same would go the other way. I love the analogy to Ben Franklin's printing press.

I'm so excited. My new computer is really coming together. I just bought my first 4K screen and I'm going to mount it on my "mobile desktop" chassis. I'm trying to decide whether to use it as my PLEX server or to go with the Raspberry Pi. I guess since I have to reboot my desktop somewhat often I'll make the Pi my server. I have a 1TB hard drive I can plug into it. It may need supplemental power, but it could be worth it. I tried ripping my DVD collection but instead I'm just going to torrent all the DVDs I own in MKV format. The external Blu-ray player I got just sucked at ripping. 

Tell me about the new build. What core, what GPU, memory... what is your intended purpose for it? 

I remember you mentioning a "mobile desktop". Basically, you're going to open mount it on a cart, right? Kind of like a test-bench system. 

I am of mixed emotions on a Pi as a Plex server. I have a Synology NAS - it has a similar ARM based processor and memory capacity - the problem with it is it can't transcode on the fly. You need more memory and CPU for that. The next model up of Synology NAS can do it. But - if you don't mess around with online transcoding and you're not streaming to external devices, my server works fine. The other problem I have is that I'm double natted and Plex doesn't work well with that... so I've never done much with the Plex part because I don't want to screw around with the routing and firewall rules to make that happen. A lot of work to be able to watch movies across my own Internet in a hotel in Chicago. 

Per dollar invested - dedicating the Pi to being the server makes far more economic sense.

I got a blu-ray external and then downloaded a trial version of a blu-ray ripper. 

I ripped a blu-ray. It took longer, it took way more storage - and, ultimately, in digital format, I'm going to compress it down to a lossy codec anyhow... 

So why not just rip it from a DVD and save the extra steps. 

And... I've already got registered DVD ripping apps - but I'd have to register a new BluRay ripping app - and in my experience, they're trying harder to prevent BluRay ripping than DVD - and BluRay has better security. 

So... it is also the less expensive and easier to exploit vector for cracking copy protection. 

I'd be creating more activity, but I'm doing all kinds of travel and other "Wife things"that prevent me from getting a lot of opportunity to do "me" things.

Nope, still running, just no activity.

Making some "me" time right now. Everyone else is inside, so I'm out on the back porch looking at a mountain range listening to birds chirp. It is a fucking madhouse inside. 

Right as I posted this, my battery died, and the battery on my phone is dead, and I don't have a fast charger... 

So now I'm up in one of the bedrooms. 

But this *was* the view.
