Subject: MiSTer core/main settings explanations?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Where can I read a detailed explanation of every setting/option for each core? A detailed change log would be nice too.

It's probably just me, but I'm not seeing a place to read in detail about what specific settings or options do either in the cores or for the main OS. I've googled a few times and have checked the github pages for cores as well.

Some are obvious like aspect ratio changes, but some others aren't... especially if I'm not familiar with the original hardware or issues. As an example I think the Genesis core has a resolution option that goes between original and "corrected" and the best I can figure is that corrected shows circles as circles, lol.

Subject: AO486 to a SD CRT?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi folks,

I've been struggling to find a solution that matches my setup, and it might be that there's simply not one due to the limitations of the core / the tech it's trying to recreate.

Basically, I want to force a 240p or 480i signal out of the AO486 core to a Sony 14M2U via RGB. I think this could more generally apply to most screens built only for standard definition signals.

I understand if the results might be imperfect, but does anyone have a batch of settings that can get me close?

Subject: Changelog for updates on your wallpaper

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

A many months ago I wrote my self a program that runs at startup on the MiSTer and fetches the changes for the few recent releases and adds them as text to my wallpaper. I wasn't happy about the steps needed to compile the program, so I didn't push it to github. Two people asked me here on reddit how I did it, so I documented what I have time to document so far and uploaded it to github in case more people wanted to look into it.

https://github.com/sigboe/MiSTress

You can download pre compiled program there, and the source code is also there in full, but instructions how to compile are only partially there, so its possible for people who can troubleshoot to figure out the missing steps. I may be able to make better instructions for compilation, or share my chroot with the dependencies already installed. But not today :P

Maybe you are interested in having this feature, and maybe you are interested in giving feedback to the code or whatever.

That moment when you realize MiSTer has gone TOO mainstream and your evangelizing for the platform has been TOO successful.

Subject: Parallel processing with multiple FPGAs

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

On original hardware, you have multiple chips running in parallel (CPU, VDP, APU, etc.) in order to achieve the final output. Do you think that some day, the price of FPGAs will come down to a level where a future version of the MISter will have multiple FPGAs each running their own cores for individual chips for a ridiculous degree of performance and accuracy?

Subject: Most accurate FPGA solution for NES?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I’m thinking which one of the most common NES FPGA solutions (AVS, Analogue Nt, Mister NES core) might be the most accurate, if you are thinking how original hardware works? I have AVS and Mister and it seems there are at least some differences which I can notice, but still I can’t say which one is more ”pure”.

Subject: MiSTer & NES Mappers... Why not all of them yet?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've been curious for a bit, but another thread reminded me to ask.

Why are there still mappers for the NES that the MiSTer doesn't support? Keep in mind I'm not wondering about any mappers that aren't supported anywhere yet, but just ones that are supported on various platforms.

In general I think I understand the answer. It simply hasn't been written yet.... but there are overlaps with Everdrive and Analogue and MiSTer. For some mappers one supports it and the others don't. Even some software emulators overlap yes?

As an example... Mapper 6 listed here: http://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/2020/11/fpga-nes-and-famicom-solutions-mapper.html ---WTF is going on here. It's supported by the NT Mini and Bung Game Master (lol), but NOT the NT Mini Noir, MiSTer or Everdrive. Krikzz owns the market on mapper 252, etc, etc.

So if the mapper is known on one platform or software emulator what is the reason it's not automatically supported by all FPGAs or emulators? Is it simply a case of only one person knowing how that specific mapper works and they only ported the information to just one place? Has anyone asked that person(s) to release or port their mapper to MiSTer?? Is there no way to easily port a mapper from another source?

Does the NES community need an open and public mapper archive to encourage mapper knowledge sharing? lol.

While I don't fully expect 100% compatibility, I guess I'm just surprised to know that some mappers are supported in other places and haven't been integrated to something like MiSTer after all this time is all.

Subject: Trustworthy place to buy MiSTer SDRAM 128gb?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

The Misteraddons shop is down right now, so I ordered the 128mb from Amazon a few days ago when it said there were 4 in stock (sourced from Misteraddons). I received a message today saying that the product is unavailable with a new expected delivery of late March. Does anyone know of a good place to buy the memory right now? Thanks.

Subject: Casual Gamer's 1 Week with MiSTer Review

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Cost: Most people can get into FPGA for a lot less than they think or what youtubers tell them. The board can be had for $125 with an academic email address. I did a cost analysis in the chart below, and the overall cost is a LOT less than what you can pick up an Analogue console for these days. And the chip is also twice as powerful as what you'd find in Analogue's consoles, which is why it can run the SA1 and Super-FX chip roms.

Item Price Place to get it
De10 nano $125 Terasic
128MB SDRAM $60 eBay
Generic Linux compatible wifi usb $10 Amazon
Generic Linux compatible bluetooth usb $10 Amazon
MakerSpot Micro USB OTG Hub $7 Amazon
128GB Samsung Select microSD card $20 Amazon
8bitdo wired SN30 Pro controller $25 Amazon
Total $257

Setup: MiSTer UI can seem intimidating to some people who've used Retropie, but I'd argue setting up MiSTer is a breeze compared to Retropie, as there's no time wasted on a fancy front-end or scraping. Flash MiSTer Fusion using etcher, and add the wpa_supplicant file. Then run it once, run the upgrade script, then turn it off, and connect the microSD to computer to add roms. That's it.

Gameplay: Far better than anything I've experienced, for sure, with respect to response times, and audio. The cheat lists are a huge bonus which Analogue consoles don't even offer. It has every feature I've used on retroarch, such as cheats and filters, with the only exception being save states. Save states is one thing it lacks, which is a must for some people.

The downside: The IO Board and "official" USB Hub are unnecessary for most people, and a cash grab for sellers. YOU DO NOT NEED IO BOARD OR OFFICIAL HUB if you plan on using it on a modern TV Even the inline switch is unnecessary if you have smart plugs sitting around. If you don't have smart plugs, get those instead of the inline switch as they're not much more expensive and offer remote on/off solution. The only real problem with MiSTer is the optional peripherals cost an arm and a leg, and there's tons of people price-gouging cases. There's absolutely no reason a case should cost upwards of $20 for a board like De10-nano, unless if it's aluminum or something really premium made. (Before I get the BS and downvotes of how there's not enough people for mass production to drive the cost down: I've talked to several chinese manufacturers for board cases, and a MOQ of 100 cases would be less than $4/case shipped with heatsink and fan included...specifically for the De10-nano). inb4 I get told "but De10-Nano is not meant for consumers/not meant to be a gaming thing". Do you honestly think Raspberry Pi started selling their original board with the intention of people using it solely for Retropie?

Advice to people looking to get into FPGA:

  • IF you play a lot of retro games on original consoles, and have a huge library (or had one at one point): You should absolutely get into it, and buy the basics, but don't buy the unnecessary or overpriced parts. It supports scalpers, prevents the prices from being driven down, and prevents the community from growing due to a high perceived barrier to entry.

  • If input lag is already an issue for you: it may be something you might want to checkout, but it's not even a 100% guarantee that the flaws with the game you played on the previous device will go away with this. The screen tearing on Batman: Return of The Joker on NES still happens with FPGA. It's not magic, and you'll only be able to take advantage on a handful of games from each system at best such as Megaman on SNES which requires a low response time. One could argue that the game was poorly designed with respect to human interface in the first place.

  • If you are not that heavily involved in retro gaming: I honestly don't see a need for it, as Retropie with Pi 4 + run ahead feature are already fast enough for up to 32bit era. All of the myths about FPGA being so much better are just that: myths. Remember, FPGA is for those people who collect games and already are a victim of OCD. My favorite device for retro gaming is still my Nintendo Switch with Retroarch. Why? It has cheats, save states, can be played portably, and be docked, and the input latency has never effected my gameplay.

Subject: Did I fry my USB Hub 2.1?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hey all, looking for some insight. I have a mister setup with a USB HUB v 2.1 that was all working fine this morning. I went to setup the mister on my living room TV and mistakenly plugged the mister's y power cable (the one that shipped with my usb hub) into the wrong power supply. The voltage was definitely too low. The mister would not properly boot, and I realized my mistake.

Now, I unplugged everything, and when I plugged in the original power supply that came with the Mister, NOTHING would power on. I found that the DE10 would power on ONLY if I unplugged the other part of the y-cable from the USB Hub. If I power on the DE 10 with the power disconnected from the hub, it works fine. As soon as I plug the USB hub in, the DE10 shuts down, as if it is shorted.

I pulled everything apart, and thankfully the DE10 is working fine, and the USB is still working with my older non-powered hub. So my Mister works, but I don't know what's wrong with the USB Hub add-on. Did I fry the y-connector cable, or the entire USB board? The only thing I notice is that the USB 8 led flashes red for a brief fraction of a second when I first connect power. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks in advance!
