Subject: Project Highlight: Arch Linux of the MiSTer (MisterArch & MOnSieurFPGA)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

The other day I shared and stickied a post about a project that provides an alternative, open Arch Linux-based OS for the MiSTer. What I didn't realize was that a similar and related project was shared here just a few weeks ago, and I missed it.

One of my goals with the subreddit has always been to highlight the cool things that people in this community make, and to do so in a way that is fair and gives everybody a chance for their work be exposed to the rest of the community.

So, I'm going to try to fix my mistake here by making a new sticky post that properly credits and highlights both of these interesting projects. I'll do my best to summarize these projects and provide links where you can read the details.

"MiSTerArch" by u/amstan

This project combines MiSTer binaries with Arch Linux ARM on the usual DE10-Nano hardware to create a more typical and configurable Linux environment, complete with a package manager (pacman) for distribution and updating and scripts and cores.

Here's what u/amstan has to say about it:

I became annoyed how un-linuxy the main Mister OS is. I understand it's designed to be an appliance, but it prevented me from doing quite a few things.

So I decided to run the MiSTer userspace binaries on Arch Linux ARM.... on the MiSTer kernel on a de10 board.

The install procedure is a little complicated for people that are not familiar with installing things this spartan, I'm working on making it more smooth with ansible scripts (and perhaps offer prebuilts for both the packages and the whole rootfs). If you bear with it you should get the same screenshot I have.

At that point it's just like every other MiSTer setup, when it boots you see the menu and can load any cores. It's just that now it's also a sane linux machine and can administer it likewise; no more dealing with fat32 or linux settings that disappear on "updates". I wrote a section on some of the cool things one can now do with arch on a mister. - u/amstan

"MOnSieurFPGA" by u/atrac17

This project is a separate build of Arch Linux for DE10-Nano and MiSTer binaries based on some of the work that u/amstan did in the MiSTerArch project.

Having not yet delved into either of these projects personally, it seems like the main innovation here that this project includes a pre-built SD card image for easier and more casual-friendly installation and setup.

Here's what u/atrac17 has to say about it:

Why Should I Use MOnSieurFPGA?

MOnSieurFPGA images give the end-user freedom to choose what THEY decide to do with the Linux ARM side of THEIR DE10-Nano.

Will MOnSieurFPGA images affect the MiSTerFPGA binaries or make the MiSTerFPGA framework unstable? NO.

Is MOnSieurFPGA intended to replace the MiSTerFPGA distribution setup? NO. It is an alternative.

Will MOnSieurFPGA enhance your end-user experience? YES.

Here's a few examples why YOU might want to checkout MOnSieurFPGA!

The ability to update and add Linux drivers! Wi-Fi sucks? Not anymore! Free yourself from wired restrictions after initial setup.

Don't want to wait 30 seconds for your SNES 8GB compressed zip file to open? Rejoice! It's instantaneous! Were you wasting SD/Storage space and uncompressing your files? NOT ANYMORE!

Extend your vintage computer cores by using your favorite open-source tools on MOnSieurFPGA and the SHARED FOLDERS!

Develop for the MiSTerFPGA platform? Then MOnSieurFPGA images are for you. Anything that isn't taxing on the arm7h cpu is now at YOUR discretion. Having the ability to add userspace development tools and/or utilities for MiSTerFPGA without using additional devices is great. Maybe you want to make an MegaDrive game? Well, now you can use SGDK by Stephane and compile the rom on the device you're going to test it on! There's a romantic side about using the device every one's going to be playing on for your vintage software development!

At any rate, I figure that people who have experience with desktop or server Linux might be interested in both of these projects. I know I am! So, I'm looking forward to trying them both out at some point and I'm excited to see both of these projects develop.

Subject: Just got my MiSTer FPGA sandwich

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I just got it and was able to use the update all script to have a good collection to try it out, to say that I'm impressed would be an understatement. That "feeling" of something being off that I so frequently had with software emulation is gone. Just. Completely. Gone!

The community behind this project is truly deserving of praise and respect and more.

I'm looking forward to learning more about MiSTer FPGA and being a member of the community.

If anyone has any curated collections of (highest rated) roms to recommend, please share, as I am concerned I will be a bit spoiled for choice with the "complete" collections I've seen floating around.

Subject: 15khz switching on MIST

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hey everyone,

I've recently gotten my hands on an old MIST box with minimig. I have a commodore amiga screen attached via vga to scart. Set the scandoubler to 1 in the ini screen and everything boots up fine.

It's just the moment I move the 9pin joystick to the right the screen switches to scandoubler=0. I have tried other joysticks and even usb pads and they give the same result. When I press the middle button on the MIST to reset screen res it goes back to normal until i press the right stick again. All other directions are unaffected. Firmware is the latest one.

Any ideas about what might cause this?

Subject: Those cheap Composite/S-Video breakout SCART breakout passthrough adapters work hilariously for Guncon2 support if you're outputting RGB from your MiSTer. Although tapping the CSync cable from HD-15 to RCA or the Y/Green cable from Component is a bit cleaner. :)

Subject: Do FPGAs used in console emulation replicate the actual RTL logic of the hardware or just the timing of hardware?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I thought it was just the timing, but I’ve recently read some things that make it sound like people deface the chip and reverse engineer the transistor level schematic and rebuild it in HDL. Which is it, or is a combination of both?

Subject: (Question) What's the cheapest route to a full, working MISter setup?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I do wanna play lots of the neo Geo, so need the more ram sadly. I also am interested in the CAVE shmup core, FM towns, general mame and PC engine, with the chip shortage idk where to look as lots of usual spots are sold out. I don't need anything fancy, I just have been disabled/on fixed income so need something to do, but due to that don't have a ton of moneys. Thanks y'all have a good day! :)
