Subject: Are there any borders for GBA, or is it something that's even feasible?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Akin to the SGB borders. It would help mask the slight CRT geometry issues I have that are annoyingly apparent around the tiny GBA output :(

Subject: Is is okay to leave a jumper on 5V for composite output on MiSTer indefinitely?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Recently bought an Antonio Villena composite adapter for MiSTer for use on my CRT. Read that I have to change the jumper on the IO board to 5V from 3V. Aside from changing the ini settings, if I want to go back and forth between composite use with my CRT and HDMI use with my ASUS Monitor and will it be alright to leave the jumper on 5V? Or will have to go back and move the jumper to 3V if I want to use VGA, component, and/or HDMI output?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Your opinion about which system is "better" is welcome, however, what I'd also like is that you highlight (and explain, if necessary) the specific differences between the two systems.

  • SDRAM 128MB
  • IO board (for VGA and Scart output)
  • 6mm heatsink
  • Acrylic case
  • Replacement screws and pillars
  • Adjustable fan cooler
  • USB hub with 7 ports
  • DB9 joystick port, protected for SNAC
  • AC power supply
  • microSD card, 8gb, with all installed
  • microSD extender
  • SPDIF optical through 3.5mm connector
  • ON/OFF switch
  • Internal speaker
  • RTC addon with battery and OLED (optional)
  • VGA->Scart adapter or VGA->YPbPr adapter or Scart cable
  • Size: 123x111x32mm. Weight: 283gr

MiSTer Multisystem:

  • board with 128mb of SDRAM, an HDMI coupler, a USB and a network cable
  • 100% compatible with existing MiSTer cores
  • HDMI, VGA and RGB SCART video outputs supporting modern and retro CRT displays
  • Integrated RGB SCART sync and auto 4:3 or 16:9 selection (no need to edit ini files)
  • Audio output via 3.5mm, TOSlink or SCART
  • Audio in via a 3.5mm input jack
  • Integrated powered 7 port USB hub and internal USB headers
  • 128mb SDRAM on board (can be removed and replaced)
  • Integrated SNAC (Serial Native Accessory Converter) support for original gamepad, light gun and peripheral support
  • 3.3v and 5v fan connectors (3 pin)
  • Add on slot for modular upgrades and enhancements
  • Integrated HDMI isolation bank switches to suit your display (CEC/I2C/HotPlug/Power etc)

Subject: Can MiSTer be used as an x86 PC?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've been exploring the retro programming options for MS-DOS, and it seems currently there isn't a single best option. My goal is to have a C compiler and an assembler running natively in MSDOS or Windows 3.1/9x.

There's the old hardware route, but it's ...well... old, malfunction prone, huge, and more expensive by the day... not really feasible. A modernized 486 or Pentium could cost more than fully specc'd mister these days. Then there's the software emulation, Dosbox & Co. which is great for gaming, and even running most apps, including installing Windows up to 98. But for various reasons, any emulator option I tested had issues when used for code compilation. I've tested all sorts of Microsoft, Borland, OpenWatcom compilers on all sorts of Dosbox combinations, and all had dealbreaking issues. Mostly outright dosbox crashes/locks on anything more than a basic "hello world" program.

So, anybody tried MiSTer in this use case scenario? Installed MSDOS 6 or Windows 95, Microsoft C, Borland Turbo C++, Open Watcom? Is it feasible?

Subject: Recommended interpolation/LCD filters for GBA?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've been using the standard Interpolation (Sharp) filter for most cores, but I realized the GBA is a different aspect ratio. Is there another interpolation setting I should use? Also what about LCD filters? I tried the Gameboy Color filters but it didn't look quite right on GBA.

Subject: Can't get Antonio Villena's VGA to Composite adapter working on MiSTer

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've already put composite_sync=1 in my Mister.ini file, disabled, SOG and power VGA connector, pin 9, to 5V. Most of the time now, I get no display. When I did get the main menu to come up, as soon as I tried to load a Core, it would split the screen in half and show a double image in single colors (green or red). I'd have to reboot. Now, I get no display from the adapter no matter what settings I try to change. Appreciate any help.

Subject: is MiSTer my only option for playing rom files?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

its extremely hard and expensive to find retro hardware/games where i live so systems like analogue pocket and polymega is not a good option for me.

But the de-10 stocks are pretty inconsistent (AFAIK) so getting it to build a MiSTer wouldn't be easy for me. are those my only option?

Subject: Finally ordered all the parts

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

After about a year of procrastination (I annoyingly missed the boat on cheap(er) DE10 Nano boards on eBay), I've finally ordered the last of the parts to build a complete Mister FPGA set up:

DE10 Nano with 32Gb card Analogue IO board plus fan USB hub board RTC board 128mb ram board 3D printed case

Cost just under £340 in total which isn't brilliant but not bad either (bearing in mind the lack-of-stock premium currently in the UK).

As I'm new to this, how easy is it to get it all of it working happily? Definitely want nes and snes cores on there.

I have quite a bit of experience in the raspberry pi world and they can be right finnickity little b*ggers to get working properly.
