Subject: MENU/OSD (F12) button not recognized anymore on joypads

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I'm having a weird issue with my MiSTer controllers; after setting everything up for the first time and configuring the buttons on my joypads/joystick they worked flawlessly. I'm using a wireless RetroBit Saturn pad 2.4GHz via dedicated USB receiver, an 8-BitDo SN30 Pro GB via BlueTooth (in X-input mode) and a MadCatz Street Fighter IV joystick wired via USB. On the Saturn pad I used a combo (SELECT + LEFT) and on the SN30 a dedicated button (HOME/HEART) for MENU/OSD which used to work perfectly. All of a sudden the OSD button (combo) doesn't do anything on any controller, except when pressing F12 on a keyboard (maybe I shouldn't have run the update_all script?).

My setup is quite barebones; a DE-10 Nano with 32MB SDRAM connected to a simple 7-port USB Hub via an OTG cable. In the hub are the 2.4GHz receiver for the Saturn pad, a WiFi dongle and a BlueTooth dongle. The hub can be powered separately via it's own PSU, but it makes no difference, removing and changing dongles didn't make any difference either. Note: this setup used to work perfectly for some time but suddenly stopped.

I tried deleting all files from media/fat/config/inputs and configured all joypads again, the button-input gets recognised during the controller configuration, but not anymore afterwards.

What to do?

Subject: The future of retro gaming

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Several months ago, when The Verge ran a major story on MiSTer FPGA, I warned that the consequences to the FPGA and emulation community could be very negative on the MiSTer Discord. I was attacked by so many members of the MiSTer FPGA community for this statement - I quit the Discord channel that day. I knew eventually I'd get to say, "I told you so."

Today is that day.

https://news.yahoo.com/microsoft-gaming-chief-calls-industry-214423048.html

What Microsoft is calling for is perpetual, Disney style corporate copyright of every title ever released, never lapsing into public domain or "abandonware" status. "Always remaining available to gamers," means "always being paid-to-own by giant corporations," and that changes the entire landscape of retro-gaming. If Microsoft achieves their goal - you'll never just download a ROM from an independent website.

High profile coverage by large media outlets of the retro-gaming phenomenon will make large software companies realize there is money being left on the table selling properties that are 20, 30, even 40 years old. It will mean Nintendo style enforcement of homebrew titles based on previous titles.

Corporate presence in retro-gaming isn't all bad. Companies like 8BitDo and Hyperkin have been good for the Retrogaming community. Projects like the NES and SNES Classic and other pnp systems have been good for the community. RetroGames and The C64 and The A500 are good for the community. They give us support, they give us production, commercial quality products that can be repurposed and kit-bashed into new projects. But... EA has acquired so many software companies and their software libraries over the last 40 years, starting with Activision - going all the way back to the Atari 2600 - imagine if they enforced *perpetual* copyright on the entire library of software titles they own the rights to.

Expect to see small, community oriented retro gaming companies like those named above, and larger, community oriented companies like GOG and Steam, snapped up by companies like EA, Microsoft and Apple. Expect a consolidation of the companies that cater to our community under larger corporations that don't see us as anything but a profit margin on their bottom line. Expect the things you hate about those larger corporations to start manifesting themselves in the retro-gaming experience.

There has been a lot of infighting in the FPGA community over "open sourced" vs. "closed source". Those who are advocates of the completely open MiSTer approach have attacked DIY small companies and organizations like Apollo... guys making ATX cases and console cases for the DE10 Nano/MiSTer - because they're not "open source" enough.

This is ridiculous and a distraction. Stop focusing on small, grassroots, "Mom and Pop" sized companies where some dude or a team of people are trying to make a little income off the Retro community by selling a product for something they too are *fans* of.

The *real* danger is a bunch of suits in a board room at a HUGE corporation going, "We can capitalize on this and monetize this community and make it go mainstream and it'll be a GREAT profit-center for our corporate division."

You're all spending so much time fighting yourselves in your own community, you're all missing the looming, much more present danger. And I told you it was coming - and a bunch of you dismissed me. Here it comes. You're going to be very unhappy when it gets here.

Subject: Love this case, except for one minor complaint

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Anyone use this case? Got it from an eBay listing. It appears to be from MisterFPGA.co.uk. this is an amazing case, except I have one minor complaint about it.

The three buttons on the front (where you hit either reset, OSD or user) fit a little too tight on the mister. Right now the four screws on the top of the case are not screwed in all the way. If I did screw them all the way in, the three buttons will get jammed and will hold the reset button, and therefore the Mister will never power on.

Anyone else own this case? Anyone else experience the same obscure issue? Outside of that, I absolutely love this case.

While you're at it, feel free to post your cases as well.

Subject: Best capture device for the Mister FPGA?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

what's up guys. i did a quick search on here, but didn't see a lot of information about this.

i have a couple questions for Mister enthusiasts:

  • what capture device do you use for your Mister?
  • what are your current Mister.ini settings (if not default)
  • related to the previous question, did you have to change any settings in order to make your capture device work efficiently?
  • what would you say is the best capture device to use for the Mister?

reason i ask is because my capture device does not work well at all. i tried everything i could to fix the issue, but i cannot get my capture device to record at all (it will output the video and audio on the TV just fine). i asked a few support forums on how to remedy this issue, but it seems to be such an obscure issue, no one seems to know what the solution is. that isn't a jab at anyone, that just tells me i use a shitty capture device lol.

anyway, what is your setup?

Subject: MISTer randomly stops responding to keyboard and joystick

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Basically the title: my MISTer seems to randomly stop responding to keyboard and joystick (though other things seem to be working). Seems to happen in all cores. Any ideas?

I would blame by e-Bay USB OTG hub, but it seems to happen with the (branded OTG adaptor I got for my Pi too).

Subject: Dull colors on MiSTer v6.0 VGA/RGB output

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi all. My MiSTer has very noticeably dull colors - reds especially are a murky brown-ish shade, but all colours seem off. The colors look equally bad on my 31khz and 15khz monitors, scandoubler on or off. A-B testing against the VGA out of my 980ti is night and day.

The board is from misteraddons, and has all the components populated. I've tried different cables, and I've tried the SOG switch too. Nothing seems to help.

Does anyone else have similar issues with their MiSTer? Any tips for getting better output? I'd love to use this on my 15khz monitor, but poor colors kinda defeats the purpose. Thanks!
