Subject: What do you think is the highest limit for FPGA Gaming?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I've heard of RTL Engineering's video where he purposes a high end system that could do N64 and maybe Dreamcast and PS2 with two FPGAs on a board, with one for the CPU and one fr the GPU, but that's pushing it and with a hybrid that has a socket for a Pentium III and use one FPGA for the bridge and one for the GPU.

But would emerging technologies help like exotic semi-conductors or TSMC's 3D Cache Technology push more potential? Maybe implement a WiiU?

Subject: Have an extra 32MB SDRAM board?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I'm looking to buy a 32MB SDRAM board for the time being to enjoy the cores that require SDRAM, but not the larger amount.

Do you have an extra, working one sitting around, perhaps if you've upgraded? Are you in the US? Please let me know!

MiSTer - adjusting screen position using vga_scaler? (also questions about GB/A cores)

Hi everyone, I've been having an issue using the Game Boy and GBA cores on my CRT: for some reason, these two cores cause this on-screen display you see on the top right here to stay there permanently (with most content it would just fade away after a couple seconds.)

https://preview.redd.it/dfo17b4n47i71.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=b5240b1377dfb078714a64a03884e634ba594810

I'm assuming it's acting weird due to the odd refresh rate these systems put out. Now, my issue would be easily solved if I could just move the screen down a bit. I've actually asked about this on the Github page for the GBA core, but unfortunately a CRT adjust feature like on the arcade cores isn't something that's planned to be implemented. Apparently there are manual adjustments you can make to the core if you build it yourself, but that's not really an option for me currently as I'm on Mac (+ I would have to do this every time there's an update.)

Now I'm wondering if the vga_scaler setting could help? Unfortunately I'm not sure what numbers to punch in exactly (i.e. what each respective value actually does) and I hear it can cause issues on a consumer CRT if you fuck something up, so I'd like to avoid that. Does anyone have pointers? I'm using the VGA out with a VGA -> SCART cable.

The main reason I'm interested in playing these cores on my CRT, by the way, is because on my 4k TV (Sony X900H/XH90,) there's a consistent scrolling judder with GBA and Game Boy games regardless of which vsync_adjust setting I use. I haven't experienced any issues with vsync_adjust=2 on any other core, but with GB/A, all three setting (0, 1 and 2) seem to operate the same way. I have sync core to video turned on as well. Has anyone else experienced this? Again, I'm assuming this one also just doesn't like the GB/A refresh rate, but it'd be great if there was some kind of solution for this problem.

Subject: MiSTer FPGA with mt32-pi power supply question

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I ordered a MiSTer FPGA as well as a mt32-pi (on a Raspberry Pi 3A+). The MisTer comes with 5V 2A power supply, will that be enough to power the Pi through the MisTer using its USB hub? If not, any recommendations for a power supply with enough power for this setup?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Can someone identify what MiSTer i/o board this is, and where I can get it? Picture here!

I've seen it in one of RetroRGB's videos, the one about the MiSTerCade, about 10 secs into the video: MiSTerCade: Installation and Overview

I know there are adapters out there as well, but I would prefer to know what this board is.

Subject: Alternative

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi, I am interested in FPGA gaming, however, I know that the mister project exists and is well supported, my problem is that I live in the UK and getting hold of a de10 nano is difficult and very expensive, so my question is, is there an alternative FPGA board I can use? I am completely new to this and this is probably a stupid question, but I won't know until I ask.

Subject: MiSTer.ini: What do these video_mode settings mean?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I'm trying to figure out how to properly display the output from my MiSTer to an old 4:3 LCD NEC monitor. I set the dvi_mode=1 but the output is giving me a very warped output so I figure I need to adjust the video mode. But I can't figure out how to change these settings:

; 0 - 1280x720@60

; 1 - 1024x768@60

; 2 - 720x480@60

; 3 - 720x576@50

; 4 - 1280x1024@60

; 5 - 800x600@60

; 6 - 640x480@60

; 7 - 1280x720@50

; 8 - 1920x1080@60

; 9 - 1920x1080@50

;10 - 1366x768@60

;11 - 1024x600@60

;12 - 1920x1440@60

;13 - 2048x1536@60

;

; custom mode: hact,hfp,hs,hbp,vact,vfp,vs,vbp,Fpix_in_KHz

; video_mode=1280,110,40,220,720,5,5,20,74250

My display is 1280x1024 with a 81.1 kHz horizontal refresh rate, 75Hz vertical refresh rate. I'm not sure how to fill this out. Can anyone tell me what these terms are referring to?
