The Russians seem to have it dialed in, honestly. Anyone who the Democrats absolutely hate, instantly become a little more trustworthy, these days.

One of the biggest reasons LoTR was beautiful was physical and practical distance from Hollywood. The guilds don't control New Zealand so you get better extras for less money, and they needed tens of thousands. They don't control everything else, either. And the government doesn't take them for granted. They were tickled to receive the revenue and only demanded the shockingly beautiful environment be preserved.

The Hobbit was ten times more a Hollywood movie. MGM let the culture seep in, and Jackson was so exhausted that he refused to do the movie. If Guillermo del Toro hadn't left the production they might have respected historically vision simply because Hollywood has institutional respect for him. Instead Peter Jackson got cajoled into doing it, bullied into a Hollywood homunculus, and lost all the health he had fought for after the first trilogy. What could he do but fall back on his Slasher Movie Director instincts? I don't remember a quote or anything, but I got the impression he wasn't proud of The Hobbit.

At least he gets to do nothing more or less than he wants for the rest of his career. No more strings on Pete.

I didn't really know that the Hobbit had directorial challenges during shooting... but I do vaguely remember that del Toro had a part in it. I think I can see why Hollywood would tap del Toro for The Hobbit with Jackson unwilling to do it - but I also see that tapping del Toro for the Hobbit shows has narrow minded Hollywood is in their understanding of different genres is. He might seem like the right guy for the job... if you see Pan's Labyrinth, The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones as completely interchangeable franchises within the fantasy genre.

The Hobbit should have been done as a child's movie, just like the book, and avoided the weighty romance, social justice and other themes that chained it down. They could have had another "A Princess Bride," but what they ended up with was something that made the scope of the LoTR trilogy look like a fluke.

"Nope, we were wrong, Hollywood *still* can't actually do high fantasy well..."

Perfectly put.

And now for something entirely different.

Someone finally coaxed Pauly Shore out of hiding. I've really enjoyed some of his podcast. Here he is telling some blonde what to do in an exercise video.

Verdict: Moar.

So true story, I had put a picture of Joe Piscipo on my original website way back in like, 1997. I forget why, but it was a throwaway picture. Someone contacted me via e-mail and was totally like, "Joe is going to make a comeback! It is going to happen any minute now. He is the greatest comic genius of our time!"

Only, it was in all caps and rambling and terrible grammar, punctuation and spelling.

I shared it with my wife. It was the very earliest days of the Internet.

My wife's phone data has gotten so much easier to deal with since I convinced her to get an Android. She has adjusted well too, I don't think she'll go back.

I hate fighting with iPhones to be able to manipulate my data the way I want. I love the Note 10+, DEX, and just USB mass media mode. Makes it so much easier to move files and data around.

From what I've heard, sharing files over Bluetooth was always the goal and Apple people love the ease of their system for that. Just like Apple. Why not use the method everyone already uses, too? No, we're fancy.

Bluetooth is really a terrible transport for file transfer. I don't understand why Apple insists on bucking interoperability by avoiding things like NFC - which also kind of sucks.

BT is just horrible altogether. My daughter forgot to bring a mouse to Thanksgiving, and so did I - so my Brother-in-Law let her use his Razer BT gaming mouse. She couldn't get it to connect and stay connected to her Mac. After futzing with it for about 15 minutes, I figured out how to basically forget it and make it forget its connection to his laptop - then it connected to her Mac.

Two days later he called me, he couldn't get it to connect to his laptop again. He brought them both over. 5 minutes later, he was going, "I tried everything you did, it wouldn't work for the last two days."

I don't think he did quite what I did. I know the secret ritual in the proper order. Forget the mouse in BT settings on the PC, disable BT on the PC, hold down the right buttons on the mouse for the right length of time. Turn the mouse off and on, turn BT on, set the PC to discoverable, start the BT pairing on the mouse... sacrifice a goat to Cthulu by a crimson December moon.

So I've heard. The way they're destroying the Hollywood movie industry - I'm wondering if they don't plan to remove decadent California as the nexus of cinema, kind of the way that Detroit was destroyed as the nexus of the automotive industry.

Disney producing the live-action Mulan in China may be foreshadowing of what is to come.

Since all the way back at the MeToo movement, I've been suspicious of what is going on in Hollywood. The most powerful people there have been caught up and removed or disgraced because of scandals that everyone on the Left has known were going on for decades. Guys like Bob Iger and Kathleen Kennedy have driven multi-billion dollar franchises that were bellwethers in Hollywood, perpetual money machines, into the ground, and no one, not their board of directors, not their shareholders, has done a thing to stop them. No matter how many people have turned up their noses at the transparent political agenda constantly rammed down the throat of every blockbuster release for the last 12 years, Hollywood has attacked the *customers* as the problem and then doubled-down on more-of-the-same in their next release. Then Covid comes, and they embrace a policy that kills the already struggling cinemas where they share so little of the profits that the cinemas have basically become concessions peddlers to make a profit - and with the economy good, most consumers have stopped smuggling in snacks and beverages because we know *someone* has to subsidize them, even if it means paying $45 for $10 worth of stale chocolates, Red Vines, and flat soda.

And Hollywood is a major source of the Left's political warchest. It is literally cutting off their nose to spite their face, the way they've been destroying Hollywood.

Hollywood isn't meant to survive. California actually *needs* to be economically neutered. It is the home of Western Baizou Liberal that believes that socialism and wealth distribution should apply to all of society... except themselves.

It is ground zero for Useful Idiots. The Chinese actually use that word, "baizou," to describe Western White Liberals who act socially conscious but are more hypocritical and contemptable than the US political Right. They consider us at least *honest* in that we embrace greed and material wealth and meritocracy.

But a Hollywood California in CHINA? Control of the global film industry and direct beneficiary of all of its profits? The ability to control the political messaging in the worldwide film industry, for every major film and studio ever?

That would be a major win for the CCP.

I think I'm on to something here. Hollywood is going to find that they're the hand being bit by whom they have been feeding.

(I know you don't want this in every room, Ig... so I'm going to post it in Politics in Paranoia - look at that, I pulled and moved my own message!) :)

The fact that it actually seems kind of plausible, and that I came up with it stone cold sober, I'm not a little drunk, and I'm going... "yeah... I can see that..."
Is just one more example that we've crossed some sort of line as a society and now live in a bizarre mirror reflection of what reality should actually be.

Suddenly it isn't a "teenage sex comedy," it is a suspense thriller about a male prostitute abusing a minor.

Joy Goodson is a high-achieving 17 year old high school student who lives with her wealthy parents in the Chicago North Shore area of Glencoe. Her father wants him to attend Princeton University, his alma mater, so Joy participates in Future Enterprisers, an extracurricular activity in which students work in teams to create small businesses. When her parents go away on a trip, Joy's friend, Mellisa, convinces her to take advantage of her newfound freedom to have some fun. On the first night, she raids the liquor cabinet, plays the stereo loudly, and dances around the living room in her panties and button-down shirt to "Old Time Rock and Roll". The following day, Millisa calls a male escort named Jack on Joy's behalf. When Jack turns out to be a transvestite, Joy pays her just to leave, but before she does, she gives Joel the number for another escort named Lane. That night, Joy is unable to sleep and hesitantly calls Lane, who turns out to be a gorgeous blonde man, and they stay sexually engaged all night.

Lane asks Joel for $300 for his services. She goes to the bank, but when he returns, Lane is gone, along with her mother's expensive Steuben glass egg. Joy finds Lane and demands the egg back, but they are interrupted by Lane's pimp Guido, who pulls a gun. While in her father's Porsche 928, Joy is chased by Guido, but eventually escapes. Lane tells Joy that the egg is with the rest of her stuff at Guido's. Joy lets Lane stay at her house while she goes to school. When she returns, her friends have come over, and Lane has invited another escort, Vick, to stay, but Joy rejects the idea. The men leave, only to encounter Guido and get into an altercation on Joy's front lawn before running back into his house. Joy agrees to the men spending one more night. Later that night, Joy, Lane, Vick, and Joy's friend Belinda go out and get high on marijuana. After Lane accidentally undoes the parking brake in the Porsche while retrieving her wallet, the car rolls down the hill and onto a pier (despite Joy's desperate attempt to stop it); the pier collapses, and the Porsche sinks into Lake Michigan.

When Joy takes the car to a repair shop, she is horrified to learn how much it will cost to fix it. She and Lane later decide to turn her parents' house into a brothel for a night; Joy's share of the profits will pay for the repairs. The party is a huge success; the house is packed with Joy's friends and classmates and Lane's co-workers. However, the recruiter from Princeton, Rutherford, chooses that night to interview Joy for admission to Princeton. The interview is plagued by interruptions, and Rutherford is unimpressed by Joy's résumé. Afterwards, he stays at the party and becomes acquainted with Lane's friends. After the party, Joy and Lane go and make love on the Chicago "L". The next morning, Joy finds his house has been burgled. When he tries to call Lane, Guido answers; he tells Joy that he will let Joy buy back his furniture. Joy and her friends manage to get everything moved back in just as her parents walk in, though her mother notices a crack in her egg. Later, Joy's father congratulates her; the interviewer was very impressed, and Joy will be accepted into Princeton. Joy meets Lane at a restaurant, and they speculate about their future. He tells her that He wants to keep on seeing her; She jokes that it will cost him.
