Subject: Torn between a BMW 330e and a Model 3

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Guys, I need your help deciding between the 2 cars. I just moved to SoCal and need a new (first) car. I will be facing a 2/3x weekly commute which is roughly 110 miles RT on the I405 for my new job. (LA to Orange County)

Both these cars are carpool lane eligible which will save some time but im struggling between the two options. My head says get the Tesla (350 mile range and I have charging in my apartment) because I will save on gas and the Autopilot will be a lifesaver in rush-hour (stop-go traffic)

But my heart says get the 330e, its a much sexier car with a quality interior and a fun car to drive. But it doesn't even have adaptive cruise control and might be tedious to drive in rush hour traffic.

The Tesla Long Range is roughly 40K(used) and the used 330e with CPO is roughly 38K. What are your guys’ thoughts?

Subject: 2011 x3 28i oil leak

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello! I'm hoping for hope but dont feel very hopeful. I changed my oil yesterday and I'm afraid that i may have really messed up. Normally, I do a little shakedown drive but I'm now aparently an overconfident idiot and this time I didn't. I had to drive an hour and a half drive this morning. On the way, I noticed that the rear window was dirtier than normal but didn't think too much about it. Turns out, it was oil.

10 mins away from where I needed to be, I gave it a little gas to pass someone and got a low oil pressure warning. I checked the oil level and it was lower than it was when I filled it but still within range.

I pulled off to take a look under the hood and there was oil all over the driver's side of the engine bay. I looked around the oil filter cap and noticed that the oil filter gasket was bulging out a little. It looked like I goofed when putting it on and pinched it a little. I took it off and put it back on, being careful to seat the gasket the best I could, and gently made it to a parts store about 10 mins away.

I put two quarts of oil in and a new filter and gaskets and started it. After a few minutes, it said that it was below the minimum level and that there was an oil level sensor error. So I put in two more quarts, checked again and it said that it was at the max level.

I drove for about 10-15 minutes and the oil level dropped to a little above the minimum level. I took another look and there wasn't any more oil on the filter housing or on the top of the engine bay from where I wiped off the oil from before. There's oil spray near the bottom but I'm thinking that was probably from before.

I didn't hear any knocking and it was sounding and driving normally. Does anyone have any thoughts on what could cause the oil level to drop like that again? I'm having a little panic attack worried that I just killed my engine. I dropped it off at a shop because I have nowhere to do anything being away from home and am waiting to hear from them.

Subject: bmw x5 oil consumption normal and okay? Or not okay?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Looking at some first and second gen X5's and some seem to drink a quart as often as every 800 miles. The local European indie says this leads to repetitive catalytic converter and sensor replacements and is not worth buying one with this issue. He was extremely certain about this and said he owns a 1st gen X5 as well.

Others online swear it is normal and nothing to worry about so long as you keep adding oil. I have also seen various "fixes" online that look somewhat dubious or unlikely to work long term. And no, I am not wanting to tear down the entire motor just to replace the piston rings for the permanent fix.

Where's the truth in all this?

Second question: It is better to just pay extra for the x5 diesel? We do plan to tow occasionally, but not too often.
