I had taken for granted that the nom in astronomy meant naming the stars. But it's the nom from anomie (lawlessness) that refers to order or rules.

Studying the rules of the stars. The rules you can't just make up. The rules of nature inviolate by social constructivism or any other ideology. Studying the heavens must be ironically rather grounding.

So one thing about the dial up BBS - it kept me humble about my intellect - because it was such an exclusive club, it exposed me to people infinitely more brilliant than my above average, but also quite pedestrian intellect.

The Internet and Facebook muddied that all up - and turned the signal to noise ratio way up on the noise dial.

This is one such example. I had always just assumed that... I'm not sure... because of the way it is PRONOUNCED - I assumed Astron was the "Skies" part of it and "omy" was the "study" part of it...

Kind of like Radiology, or Taxidermy and other suffixes that indicate something to do with the UNDERSTANDING of a thing. I just figured the change up... "ology" vs. "onomy" vs "dermy" had to do with the root word and what worked best with it. I mean Astrology and Astrologists was already taken and has a bad rap - right - so I figured Astronomy was kind of "We had to come up with a different suffix to differentiate from those earlier quacks."

Tonight, the light went on over my head indicated that each of these roots has some (almost certainly Latin) specific meaning about the *nature* of the study other than just saying, "This is the study of things relating to radios," or this is the study and practice of preserving once living things as statues..."

I mean for practical purposes, in our world today - that is what matters... an ology, an ologist, an onomy, an onomer... these suffixes indicate the study/art and practice - Taxidermy, Taxidermist. Interestingly, there is no Artology, though there is an artist.

I found Spanish interesting, because I occasionally discovered words like Contiene... the Spanish word for "contain".

Contain is a word that doesn't make etymological (I wonder what the etymology of etymology is, as it is another example of an ology)... sense. Hmmm... and now you've got me wondering if it is astromical or astronomical... Google thinks the later.

Anyhow... contain... the prefix "con" generally means "against" in English, "Contrary"... Contrast, Convict - it seems to be used to describe negatives. Contain? Is it AGAINST "tain" and what the hell was a "tain" in the history of our English/Germanic heritage that "against a tain" is to "hold something within?"

But contiene - in Spanish - is *clearly* a combination of the latin root "con" - "WITH" and the Spanish word Tener, "To have", conjugated in the "You or It" form of the verb. "Tiene" = "you or it have" and "Con" with...

"It has it with," lo contiene.

So... light on for that one - Contain  isn't a Germanic or English word - it comes to us from Latin - and that is why the "Con" prefix seems out of place with the word.

Thanks for sharing the interesting observation. I learned something cool tonight.

The lunar eclipse tonight was nice to watch.  In Mesa it was total.  I didn't take pictures because I have this weird quirk where sometimes I don't want to share the beauty I'm appreciating with anyone else.  It's just for me.

I do the same. I'll be experiencing something that is bringing me huge personal satisfaction or peace with life, think about calling out my wife or kid and a little voice goes, "no, this is just for you."

I think it helps me appreciate it even more that I'm not sharing it.  Seating yourself firmly in that moment, not distracting yourself with other people or the documentation process.

For sure. The same thing has arisen with cameras and the desire to take a photo and share it on Facebook. A few nights ago, I woke up early - the moon was out, the sun was rising. The moon was lighting the top of the clouds, still in darkness, silver on a black background. The sunrise was catching the bottom of them, dripping down into the lightening morning sky, and lighting them pink. It was awesome. I didn't have my camera with me, and found myself relieved.

Simple beauty like that is a blessing in the purest sense of the word.

Now, I did take a picture when the clouds made the sunset look like a laser beam shooting out of the top of a nearby mountain, and I'll show that to anyone because it was awesome lol

My phone unfortunately takes awesome pictures. :D

Everything looks either as good, or better than it does in real life, generally. Very infrequently do I take a picture and go, "nope, that isn't good enough."

Sweet. I keep almost being able to replace my phone. I had enough in the bank and then I got hit with a huge software license fee and had to save up for another week.

Then I got hit with an expensive domain renewal (two years of a premium TLD plus security) and had to save up for a few more days.

Today Hostgator tried to take my money to renew three years of unlimited hosting but I didn't have enough.

Apparently I did all my bug buys in July for the past two years.

Can't wait for a new phone.

There are phones I am interested in - but my current is a Note 10+ with 8gb of RAM, powerful quad processor core, 512GB of internal storage. It might as well be a laptop. They got to a point where the technology really isn't improving between generations so remarkably - so there isn't a real compelling reason to upgrade if you have a nice flagship model. Which is good - because the *price* of flagship models is often MORE than you can get a very nice laptop for, these days.

That's a good point. It just so happens that I break my phone often enough that my T-Mobile JUMP plan comes in handy 1-2 times a year.

We just found out that my eldest kid's cell, my wife's cell and mine are all no longer going to get security updates. I'm really not looking forward to how much this BS is going to cost. None of us are really having any issues with our phones, mine has a little screen burn in from some game I played for a while and needs to be plugged into power firmly, but otherwise all operating normally. The price of the new ones are absolutely astronomical, so I guess that gets this room back on topic. :)

So... first off... the update schedule and EOL schedule for support of smart phones and tablets are just bullshit. That world governments let corporations continue to exploit these artificial lifecycles of obsolesce is a significant part of why I believe they're overstating their concerns about the environment. The sheer amount of material waste and pollution you can attribute to these policies is *enormous* when you look at how ubiquitous devices of this nature have become globally.

But beyond that - I simply don't do a lot of things that could be compromising on my Cell phone - and when I do, I vet the permissions of the app very carefully. I avoid apps from unknown developers. Security updates on a phone generally mean less than on a PC, because most malware exploits granted app permissions - they don't use escalation of privilege or other PC style attack vectors to infect and compromise your phone and data. That is... EoL of security support isn't necessarily a reason to upgrade to a new phone, especially for your wife and kid. What kind of compromising data do they have on their phones? Tell your wife she can't do electronic banking or other financial transactions on the phone - but even then, if you stick to Paypal, Uber, Venmo, use a credit card where you can dispute charges or have credit protection - and don't store personal data like SSNs and passwords on the device - and you'll be fine. Do real computing on a real computer.

At the very least this approach should allow you to stagger your upgrades over a period of time, distributing the cost so you don't take it all as a massive hit on your monthly cellular bill.

I'm still on my Note 10+. I'm starting to get tempted by new options - but at the same time, I've got a phone with 1TB of storage total that will run a full desktop display and keyboard with DEX. I'm kinda... what more do I need?
