That was a beautiful screed. Reminded me of a lot of Beck's gritty lyrics. Even when his work is crisp or robotic, he calls it, for example, Ghettochip Malfunction:
The Gen X story of betrayal is perfect for Durden's revenge, Beck's dystopias, and everything else that looks like Detroit.
Hah! I had this job at a company that was rated #1 for employees in the area. Free lunches, Street Fighter, soda on tap, fun environment, no slackers, felt like winning. Then the owner wanted to expand and accepted investments from a Detroit-based group that started to reach its tentacles in. Every metric slowly declined and eventually we sold the scraps like AMC. Got a fun video of me scooter jousting when we downgraded our workspace during the managed decline. That's my souvenir, in place of a Gremlin.
A comparison to the words of beck - I'll take it! Thanks!
It wasn't off base though - as your example illustrates. We live in a generation where merit is rewarded with an acquisition and a lay-off of the very resource that made the acquiring company interested in the first place.
It is a weird kind of dysfunctional relationship. It is breaking up a couple because you want their lifestyle, then getting rid of the partner that you used to break up their life together and then finding that their shit doesn't work without *them*.
And then doing it again and again thinking maybe it'll work out better the next time.

Dedicated to my not-uncool niece:
Jello was only about 26 years off... but we're getting to exactly the point he describes.
[Verse 1]
I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles and never frowns
Soon, I will be president
Carter power will soon go away
I will be Führer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
Your kids will meditate in school
[Chorus]
California über alles
California über alles
Über alles, California
Über alles, California
[Verse 2]
Zen fascists will control you
One-hundred percent natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face
Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back, you say
Mellow out, or you will pay
Mellow out, or you will pay
[Chorus]
California über alles
California über alles
Über alles, California
Über alles, California
[Verse 3]
Now it is 1984
Knock-knock at your front door
It's the suede denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece
Come quietly to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don't you worry, it's only a shower
For your clothes, here's a pretty flower
Die on organic poison gas
Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown
When you mess with President Brown
[Chorus]
California über alles
California über alles
Über alles, California
Über alles, California

Subject: Where's Waldo?
A rare picture of me in my natural habitat.
If the Ramones are punk rock, does that make The Cars the original pop-punk band?
I think it may.
Subject: Thoughts on punk, origins and today
So, I just saw that my daughter, who is a Gen Z Hot Topic punk has one of those old 70's brown leather wristbands with some celtic patterns stamped into it. If you were alive in the 70s, you know what I'm talking about. Two big buttons and it wraps around your wrist and it was big with the Fleetwood Mac scene about 1973-1977. And it got me thinking about the discussions of punk. This isn't really *political*, it is about the *philosophy* of punk. So, the origins of punk were a rejection of the ideals of the hippies. The hippies were your burnt out Boomer parents who smoked pot and watched game shows on network TV and told you about how enlightened their generation were, how big of a difference they made, in the middle of a crushing economic recession, gas shortages, failing industries, and the ever present threat of total nuclear annihilation if Russia and the United States got into a big enough pissing match. I mean, that is the US perspective mid to late 70s, in England, it was a similar set of circumstances including a 10 year garbage strike. It was a crude, brutal, working class movement over there among the disenfranchised poor who saw "no future". It was a rejection of the corporate produced, polished and slick, AOR rock and sappy adult contemporary music that dominated culture at that point in time. It wasn't necessarily political - it was *apathetic*. It was nihilistic. It was obnoxious, narcissistic, intentionally offensive and abrasive. It was basically the pocket generation between the Boomers and Gen X that invented it - and Gen X who solidified it. The hippies didn't change shit. 4 of them got shot at Kent State, some more of them got their skulls bashed in at a Rolling Stones concert in San Francisco by the Hell's Angels, and they quit and went home and invented the Muppets and Star Wars and became predatory investors and by the 80s they were all wearing shoulder pads and shopping at The Sharper Image. Punk rock is about hostility - not love and peace. Don't get me wrong, punk was always inclusive, and libertarian. Let people do what they want and be themselves. But... earlier generations of punks meant this in a much wider scope. We certainly didn't believe things like, "words are violence" or that *any* ideas should be censored, no matter how repugnant. After Gen X, it seems like really the "punks" are more like their grandparents (the Boomers - who were also the Age of Aquarius hippies) in their idealism and philosophy. They don't want to burn down the world, like we did. They want to "evolve it". Which to me, isn't punk - it is just the hippies dressed like punks. Let's be honest. The political arguments arise because there has been a fundamental shift in the *philosophy* of punk. At some point, the punk movement became utopian - but it started out inherently *dystopian* - "There is no good outcome for society, so why even bother trying to CHANGE it?"
If Elvis was the King of Rock and the Beatles were bigger than Jesus, it seems like God must have Dolly Parton's back.
Better to have her back than to get run down standing in front of her, I suppose.

This makes me think Chris Cornell probably wasn't speaking up much because he wasn't on board with the way he saw things going:
Yeah
[Verse 1]
Take, if you want a slice
If you want a piece
If it feels alright
Break, if you like the sound
If it gets you up
If it takes you down
Share, if it makes you sleep
If it sets you free
If it helps you breathe
[Pre-Chorus]
Don't come over here
And piss on my gate
Save it, just keep it
Off my wave
Hey
[Verse 2]
Cry, if you want to cry;
If it helps you see
If it clears your eyes
Hate, if you want to hate
If it keeps you safe
If it makes you brave
Pray, if you want to pray
If you like to kneel
If you like to lay
[Pre-Chorus]
Don't come over here
And piss on my gate
Save it, just keep it
Off my wave
[Chorus]
Keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave, my wave
Keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave, my wave
My wave, my wave, my wave, my wave, my wave
[Verse 3]
Cry, if you want to cry;
If it helps you see
If it clears your eyes
Hate, if you want to hate
If it keeps you safe
If it makes you brave
Take, if you want a slice
If you want a piece

Mon Nov 23 2020 11:55:03 MST from WangissAll Apologies is a perfect song. And such a timely sentiment for a generation that could not have performed what was expected of it both because it wasn't possible and because it would have been a pathetic underachievement.
Work for one company and retire with a big pension? No, we're building a new, virtual universe.
I think it was possible - but that future was sold out from under us, by the fucking Boomers who were in control of the Government for the last 40 years.
Everyone *else* got to ride that gravy train, but my generation was just getting started when they outsourced and offshored it on us - and our best chance of ever getting it back probably just got cheated out of re-election.
And we're here on this system because that same status quo has already marginalized and muzzled us in the virtual universe. Face it, this is the virtual reality equivalent of a shanty-town ghetto - cardboard houses on disused and abandoned rpads on the decaying outskirt of the sparkling cities that that Information Highway goes right through.
Maybe we should start making soap.
I'm fully on board with making soap. And starting a fight club, for that matter. I'm already good with swords, my unarmed skill could use a boost.
The digital age was supposed to be about freedom. I honestly don't give two shits about Facebook or Twitter censoring people that's them shooting themselves in the foot, but the part that really bugs me is Amazon refusing hosting and other vendors following suit. Maybe what we really need to do is start an enterprise level hosting company to cover people like them, and our own bank so Mastercard and Visa can't shut us down.
I think I'd like to fight you. Wangiss too. It might be time for liberty-minded white guys to start pounding the fuck outta one another and getting accustomed to the discomfort of raw knuckles and aching jaws and busted noses as a fact of life.
Weird universal synchronicity. As I was writing that, a Liberty Mutual commercial got to the part of their jingle where it goes, "liberty, liberty, liiiib-er-teee!" God gives signs, fellas. We just ignore them.
The problem with that hosting idea is - the registrars, the backbone providers, the payers (PayPal) they can all cut off and isolate that. You've got to have a chunk of the Internet that they CAN'T cut off. I can't get my mind around how you end-run around them. You've got to be a parasite of the regular TCP/IP Internet - but you've got to be one-click plug and play accessible. You almost certainly have to be criminal. I mean - you create something like Tor or I2P - and the FIRST people who show up are Russians. They're probably good to have there - because if some politician or billionaire starts to fuck with you - they get a direct call from Putin, or someone very close to him, going, "Zis.... legislation... iz no good idea, I think." But... if you're running a show like that - they're going to want to be "your very good friend. Da?"
It is all very fucking messy.

So - my boss had Covid. Bad. Put him in the hospital. Anyhow... I had camping trips planned the previous two weekends, that got cancelled because of Covid. Maybe 3. I got exposed two times before him, and didn't want to be hours away sick. We bought this new 2500 truck, and each time we tried to go out, it got cancelled, and my wife was basically biting her own neck... and we were going to go to Mexico, and my boss, bless his heart, held out until he got the results to let us know he had it. I worked from home, because I share a small office with him, got tested, my wife and kid got tested - by Monday we knew we were clear - so I worked that week - but instead of going to Mexico, I cancelled and went to some lake up past Mogollon with my wife - just my wife and we had a lovely weekend.
But the boss is absolutely livid PISSED at me about it. Like, he is treating me like absolute dog shit. I was checking on Amazon customers from camp - but like most bosses he only sees that I didn't come in that Friday. I gave the other guy explicit permission to call me if anything came up. Told him if he needed, I'd drive back. Boss didn't see any of that. I just bailed and went on a camping trip on the Friday he was home sick.
He also didn't seek treatment until he got so bad he went to the hospital. My 72 year old father-in-law with Diabetes got medicated immediately, and pulled through it fine. My boss tried to self-treat like a flu and probably has permanent lung damage.
So... I've been in an angry-music mood.
And I'm pretty sure Peace Sells is the ideal expression of heavy metal as a musical art form. And it is very timely. (You thought this was about my boss and my job, right? Nah - it is about metal...)
What do you mean I don't believe in God?
Talk to him every day
What do you mean I don't support your system?
I go to court when I have to
What do you mean I can't get to work on time?
Got nothing better to do
What do you mean I don't pay my bills?
Why do you think I'm broke? Huh?
If there's a new way
I'll be the first in line
But, it better work this time
What do you mean I hurt your feelings?
I didn't know you had any feelings
What do you mean I ain't kind?
Just not your kind
What do you mean I couldn't be President
Of the United States of America?
Tell me something, it's still 'We the people', right?
If there's a new way
I'll be the first in line
But, it better work this time
Can you put a price on peace?
Peace, peace sells, peace, peace sells
Peace sells, but who's buying?
Peace sells, but who's buying?
No, no, no, no, no
Peace sells
Peace sells

I'm pretty sure you're right about all of that, so you built the stuff without announcing your intentions until you're big enough they can't do anything about you.
And honestly, at this point I wouldn't mind Putin in my corner. He seems like the most levelheaded evil tyrant out there. Pisses me off that Russia seems like the good guys these days. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Putin is a nice guy, but he also understands how things work and that a fucking RARE commodity these days even in world leaders.
All agreed. My exit strategies all include the possibility of becoming an expatriate somewhere freezing my ass off in Russia.
Well, we need to get you up and running with a Citadel ASAP - expand this network. You should also log in and create an account on Uncensored. More generally like minded people there. I suspect you'll eventually drag some like-minded people into the community behind you - if you start investing more time in this. That is a good thing. We also need evangelists pushing Citadel - not just mine, but the software, as the tool of Anti-Social networking - meaning that we're the alternative to major corporate social media sites and that the more of us there are, the less any ONE entity has control over the flow of information. Enough Citadels sprout up - and we become a decentralized but common-interface social media giant. Each Citadel a little nation-state of its own, but all of them united in wanting to share traffic, wanting to share information, wanting to be part of the larger community. It breaks up the single-choke point of Facebook and Twitter and Reddit, with enough momentum.

So, today I learned that Eddie Vedder wrote Glorified G because he was incensed that their drummer bought a handgun and brought it to rehearsal.
It amuses me to no end that universally people misheard "glorified version of a pellet gun" as various "blah blah blah of a pelican".
[Intro]
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
[Verse 1]
Got a gun, fact I got two
That's okay man 'cause I love God
Glorified version of a pellet gun
Feels so manly when armed
[Chorus]
(Glorified version of a) pellet gun
(Glorified version of a) pellet gun
(Glorified version of a) pellet gun
(Glorified version of a) pellet gun
[Verse 2]
Don't think
Dumb is strength
Never shot at a living thing
Glorified version of a pellet gun
Feels so manly
When armed
[Chorus]
(Glorified version of a) pellet gun
(Glorified version of a) pellet gun
(Glorified version of a) pellet gun
(Glorified version of a)
[Bridge]
Always keep it loaded
Always keep it loaded
Always keep it loaded
(Kindred to be an American)
[Outro]
(Life comes) I can feel your heart
(Ooh, life comes) I can feel your heart in your neck
(Life comes) I can feel your heart in your neck
(Like some) I can steal your heart from your neck
Glorified

So, Death Magnetic is Metallica's best album since Ride the Lightning. I know people think that Master of Puppets was their best album - but they're wrong. Ride the Lightning was the peak of Metallica's talent - and I believe it was absolutely *entirely* the influence of Cliff Burton.
Master of Puppets was produced while Burton was still alive, it was the last Metallica album with Burton influence - but it was completed after his death - and I think James and Lars already had influenced the direction of the music that made the final cut on that album, resulting in a slower, plodding style that was heavy in production focus on drums and de-emphasized guitars. It started feeling very... to me, it starts to have a heavy Irish/Scottish/English "maratime" atmosphere. The music got very gray and drab and started to evoke almost Victorian imagery of desolate, rocky cliffs and coastlines with beaten, isolated lighthouses and murky, foaming coastal waters where strange beasts lurked. Master of Puppets wasn't a bad album, it was a good album, and it was very heavy on the atmosphere - but it wasn't as good of an album as Ride the Lightning in technical guitar and composition. RTL reaches Pink Floyd level of guitar virtuosity - where hallucinogenic narcotics are greatly enhanced by the addition of that album. This was the album that sparked classical and Spanish Flamenco guitarists covering Metallica.
By And Justice For All - Lar's ego is fully unchained, and Metallica has gone from a Guitar metal band to a DRUM metal band. The balance is off on so many songs, where the drums *distract* from the drum, where Lars is showboating entire songs, and where the formula of drum heavy intros is consistently emphasized. The guitar seems like an afterthought. There were a few songs on this album that struck the right balance - One being a megahit, and Dyer's Eve being a track I really like from the album - but overall - things are headed in a bad direction. The James and Lars show was in effect. Metallica was huge, Kirk it seems was just collecting a paycheck, and James and Lars had taken over as Co-Captain of the ship in Cliff's absence.
The Wiki even reveals evidence of what I've been claiming for 30 years...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...And_Justice_for_All_(album)
"
Bass mix[edit]
At the instruction of Hetfield and Ulrich, Newsted's bass guitar was made almost inaudible.[11][14] According to Rasmussen: "After Lars and James heard their initial mixes the first thing they said was, 'Take the bass down so you can just hear it, and then once you've done that take it down a further three dBs.' I have no idea why they wanted that, but it was totally out of my hands."[11] In 2009, Hetfield said that the bass was obscured as the basslines often doubled his rhythm guitar, making the instruments indiscernible, and because the low frequencies were competing in the mix with his "scooped", bassy guitar sound.[15]
Newsted was not satisfied with the final mix: "The Justice album wasn't something that really felt good for me, because you really can't hear the bass."[11] Steve Thompson, who mixed the album, was also unhappy, and blamed Ulrich for the decision; he tried to quit the project, but was blocked by management.[14] Rasmussen said in 2018: "I’m probably one of the only people in the world, including Jason and Toby Wright, the assistant engineer, who heard the bass tracks on And Justice for All, and they are fucking brilliant."[16]
In 2019, Hetfield and Ulrich said they had mixed the bass low not to belittle Newsted, but because their hearing was "shot" following heavy touring and they "basically kept turning everything else up until the bass disappeared".[17] They decided not to adjust the mix for the remastered 2019 reissue, saying: "These records are a product of a certain time in life; they’re snapshots of history and they’re part of our story … And Justice for All could use a little more low end and St. Anger could use a little less tin snare drum, but those things are what make those records part of our history."[18]"
-------------------------------------------
And later:
...And Justice for All is a musically progressive album featuring long and complex songs,[21] fast tempos and few verse-chorus structures.[22] Metallica decided to broaden its sonic range, writing songs with multiple sections, heavy guitar arpeggios and unusual time signatures.[23] Hetfield explained: "Songwriting-wise, [the album] was just us really showing off and trying to show what we could do. 'We've jammed six riffs into one song? Let's make it eight. Let's go crazy with it.'"[19]
-------------------------------------
This was Metallica headed into their "Napster is Theft" stage as Lars became the dominant public face of Metallica - and they were headed to peak popularity with audiences far outside of the metal crowd - crossing over into some strange land of Heavy Metal Arena-Filling Jock Rock doing Monster Rock Shows with Van Hagar.
The Black Album was the last Metallica album I bought, and I didn't buy it immediately on day 1 of release. Increasingly, like Stephen King - it seemed like Metallica was delivering misses with their creative efforts - songs that no matter how many times I listened to the album, they didn't grow on me.
I think the Black Album is a strange album - there are good tracks on it. Enter Sandman was as huge as One - and a great video. The Unforgiven and Wherever I may Roam are very listenable songs, Nothing Else Matters is this album's Fade to Black and...
Yes, exactly this. Metallica had begun to rely on a formula. They were being called "Progressive Speed metal" by critics because of the experimental things they were doing with sound, timing, arrangement - but they were also just repeating the basic format of earlier albums. I called *this* back then too. I was increasingly a critic of Metallica as their influence, fame and popularity grew ever larger - to my shock. Most of the tracks on this album, I can't put a song to the title. Holier than Thou, Don't Tread on Me, Through the Never, Of Wolf and Man, the God That Failed, My Friend of Misery and the Struggle Within. 5 of 12 tracks I recognize. I know this was a problem because a song on this album can on my shuffle recently. I thought, "I don't recognize this Metallica song, I should give it a chance." I did. About 1:30 into it - I hit skip.
After this became Load and Reload...
And here is Lars, once again quoted in the Wiki, making excuses and blaming it on Jason Newsted:
""Some of that stuff was pretty cool," remarked Lars Ulrich of the album and its sequel. "With Load, it was disappointing that some people's reaction to the music was biased by how they dealt with the pictures – the hair and all that crap [see Artwork, above]. People have come up to me years afterwards and said, 'I never gave the record a fair chance because I couldn't get beyond Jason Newsted wearing eyeliner.' But 'The Outlaw Torn', some of that shit is pretty fucking awesome."[35]:
There is nothing to make me believe Jason Newsted is what took Metallica off the track, and everything to make me think that Cliff's death and Lars becoming more or less the public face and manager of Metallica is what increasingly steered their ship onto the rocks. Fuck you Lars. You were the problem.
There were little side projects during this time - Metallica was starting to become one of those mega-bands entertaining ridiculous hubris-filled ego projects - like their album with the San Francisco Philharmonic orchestra, which was basically the orchestra playing backup and being drowned out by James on guitar and Lars on drum. Instead of letting the orchestra bring the songs to a new level, it was like they were there just to add a background track to a remastered version of classic Metallica songs that had been reworked to make Lars and James the center of the attention. At this point, Metallica having a bassist or not didn't matter, and it was even easy to forget that Kirk Hammet was still a member of the band.
Load was the first album to receive any significant critical reception.
Even here, there are tracks I liked. I did not buy this album. It wasn't WORTH buying. Until it Sleeps, King Nothing, Hero for the Day, Wasting my Hate were the most memorable tracks from this album. Metallica is now down to 4 tracks on a 14 track album that were memorable when at the beginning, every song on the album was worth the listen.
Reloaded arrived with more negative criticism. I'm not going into detail - but it isn't worth the bandwidth to download it from Napster, despite it going triple platinum on release. More rockstar-excess hubris including having the indigenous Nose Harp players of Where-The-Fuck-Ever doing bizzare nose-harp solos arrives on this album (I'm looking at you, Lars - the idea to include nose-harp players has your diminutive signature written all over it. James didn't discover Nose-Harp players and go, "we've got to include these guys on our next album!" You did.)
Fuel, Unforgiven II and The Memory Remains (despite the nose harps) are the only titles on this 13 track album that made any impact. I literally saw a video of Lars trying to sell an MTV VJ on the concept, and he was an unironic precursor of Aldous Snow from Get Him to the Greek discussing how it wasn't for HIM to call himself a White African Space Jesus, that was up to Metallica's FANS to decide as he marveled about how incredible the nasal throat singing of these old people who lived in the mountain ranges of Naples were the PERFECT addition to Metallica's sound.
By St. Anger I didn't even give a fuck anymore. I don't recognize the title of a single track on the album. Metallica had been eclipsed by Sound Garden, the Smashing Pumpkins, and hell... the Offspring. The ship was on the rocks.
